My fascination with the Parable of the Wicked Tenants originated with my doctoral studies in 1970, because of the relation of this parable to the stone testimonia. Any study that has extended over such a long time accumulates debts of gratitude to a variety of people. There are two people who should be mentioned, without whom this study would never have been done. Dr. Richard Longenecker is responsible for much of my interest in Biblical studies and has assisted me in a variety of ways over several years. In addition, he carefully read and commented in detail on this manuscript. Principal Matthew Black supervised my doctoral dissertation and made judicious comments, particularly with regard to my work on this parable. Professors Ernest Best and R. McL. Wilson also read my work and offered helpful suggestions.
Recently while I was on sabbatical at the University of Tübingen, I was privileged to be able to discuss my work with Professors Hengel, Betz, and Stuhlmacher, and I am grateful for their hospitality and encouragement. North Park Theological Seminary granted the sabbatical, and I would like to thank Dean Glenn Anderson for his constant support. The Association of Theological Schools provided an award to further my research, and several individuals in the Evangelical Covenant Church also provided financial assistance. I am extremely grateful to each of them. Several people in the North Park community provided help with languages that are not customary ...
About The Parable of the Wicked Tenants: An Inquiry into Parable InterpretationDespite its importance, the parable of the wicked tenants has been an enigma to modern interpretation. The approaches to the parable have been quite varied. Some interpreters place this parable at the apex of the ministry of Jesus, while others assign little importance to it or virtually ignore it. In some cases the conclusions drawn have been unsatisfactory either because of presuppositions that are too rigid or that have been shown to be erroneous by recent developments. Any discussion of the parable is necessarily a complex one in that it involves the relation of the three Synoptic accounts, an assessment of the account in the Gospel of Thomas, the religious and economic background in Palestine, the self-designation of Jesus, and the theological shaping of the parable by the tradition and by evangelists. Because of the importance of this parable as a possible key to understanding the ministry of Jesus, particularly since its relevance has often been minimized, this parable deserves closer analysis. |
