Introduction to the Revised Edition
The Lexham Analytical Lexicon to the Greek New Testament is several tools in one. It provides a comprehensive, sense-disambiguated glossary with full citation lists. This means that every instance of every word in the New Testament is first classified by lemma (dictionary form). If the dictionary form can be used in multiple senses, then each sense is broken down as well.
Sense disambiguations are taken from Louw and Nida’s Greek-English Lexicon Based on Semantic Domains. Each cited sense references the Louw-Nida entry for further information about a particular sense of a particular word.
Each form of each Greek word that occurs in the The Greek New Testament: SBL Edition (SBLGNT) and forms of words found in the writings of the Apostolic Fathers. Each word is listed with parsing information (expanded on hover) and a link back to the primary article for the word. For further information on the morphological codes, see the below section Logos Bible Software Greek Morphology Codes.
In addition to listing the forms found in the SBLGNT and the writings of the Apostolic Fathers, forms that do not occur in SBLGNT but do occur in the NA27 and Westcott and Hort editions are listed, with morphology and lemma. In this way, the analytical lexicon covers various orthographies and variations found in many printed editions of the Greek New Testament.
Further, this revised edition includes some forms of root data for words found in the New Testament. Compound words (e.g. ἀγαθοεργέω) are noted in their parts. In addition, words that share a root (cognate words) are listed for each entry. For example, the entry for ἀγαπάω lists ἀγάπη and ἀγαπητός as cognate. In this way, words that may be related are associated, providing more information to use in the study of word usage and meaning.
Each article, then consists of the following:
• Information about compound words and cognate words found within the New Testament.
• Senses from Louw Nida, with complete reference list of every instance from the Greek New Testament and the Apostolic Fathers that likely uses that sense. If two senses are possible, or if there is question between which sense is intended, both senses are typically cited.
• Lemmas and Morphology from the Logos Greek Morphology for The Greek New Testament: SBL Edition and the Apostolic Fathers Greek-English Interlinear.
• Glosses provided for each sense are taken from The Lexham Greek-English Interlinear New Testament: SBL Edition and the Apostolic Fathers Greek-English Interlinear.
It is our hope that The Lexham Analytical Lexicon to the Greek New Testament enriches your study of the New Testament.
