PREFACE

Luke and Scripture: The Function of Sacred Tradition in Luke-Acts is a collection of exploratory studies that seek to probe the third evangelist’s understanding of Scripture, its nature, and its continuing function. These studies represent work in progress. Both of us plan to produce monographs following up certain aspects of the problems touched upon here. Criticisms and suggestions are therefore welcome.

We wish to express our thanks and appreciation to Gerald Bilkes, Melody Knowles, and Jason Van Vliet, recent graduates of Trinity Western University, who assisted in typing several chapters of the manuscript, and to Ginny Evans who assisted in preparing the indexes.

About Luke and Scripture: The Function of Sacred Tradition in Luke-Acts

In Luke and Scripture, Craig A. Evans and James A. Sanders explore how the author of the third Gospel and Acts understood the nature and function of Scripture. Throughout this collection of exploratory studies, Evans and Sanders present a variety of fresh insights into key passages from Luke and Acts, based on extensive research on ancient Jewish tradition. Clear and concise, this volume will aid a wide audience in understanding how early Christians viewed Scripture—and how it became authoritative in Christian life.
