About The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ: A Complete Critical Examination of the Origin, Contents, and Connection of the Gospels, Volumes 1–4

Johann Peter Lange, well-known 19th-century theologian, shares his scholastic research and vast Biblical knowledge in this four-volume set. This compendium of Christ’s life chronicles the prophecy and story of his life as detailed in the Old and New Testaments, focusing especially on the four gospels of the New Testament. The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ (4 Vols.), originally published in German, was published in English in 1872 and is one of the most comprehensive resources on the subject to date.

Lange, author of the well-known Lange’s Commentary on the Holy Scriptures (63 Vols.), spent the latter part of his life as a professor of theology and dogmatics. It was during this time of his life that he wrote the four-volume collection on the subject of Christ. The collection, although aimed at a scholarly audience, is also a fantastic resource for those outside the realm of academia. Johann Peter Lange approaches Christ’s life in a thorough and accessible manner, combining a critical exegesis of the gospels with historical details. This collection will continue to be an essential tool for anyone wishing to study the life and times of Christ in an in-depth manner, whether pastor, scholar, or layman, and Logos Bible Software makes the collection an easily searchable reference.

Johann Peter Lange centers volume one of The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ (4 Vols.) around the birth and ministry of Christ. A survey of the history of the gospels, the historical sphere of Christ’s life, and historic records of the life of Christ are included in this two-part introductory volume.

John the Baptist was an important introductory figure to Christ, as volume two discusses. As well as detailing John the Baptist’s testimony, this resource journeys with Christ through his travels, calling of disciples, and the controversy surrounding Christ’s later years.

From the miracles of Christ to his death and resurrection, volume three spans some of the most important events of the Christian faith, outlined by Lange in an objective and scholarly manner.

Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John contain four unique comprehensive accounts of the Christ’s life. Lange takes the time in his fourth and final volume of The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ (4 Vols.) to dissect Christ’s life from the viewpoint of each gospel. He ends the collection with an index.
