Acknowledgments and Dedication

This commentary has been far too long in the making, yet it has benefitted at each step of the process from the feedback I’ve received, both solicited and unsolicited. The impetus for this volume came from a seemingly innocuous question by Dr. Stephen Levinsohn in a hotel room in Atlanta: “What was Paul’s purpose in writing Romans?” He had been trying to drive home a point about a common Greek conjunction. The implications of the thoughts he shared with me that day took several years to process, and they now form the very heart of this commentary. Understanding the structure and organization of the Greek text is the key to resolving many of the contentious passages in the book of Romans. I am not so naïve as to think this volume will resolve all of them, but I hope it will shed new light on the issues, for scholars and students alike.

Romans is full of theological bear traps, issues that—if mishandled—can prove disastrous. I enlisted Dr. Derek Brown and Dr. Michael Heiser of Logos Bible Software, and doctor-to-be Joel Watts, to help draw my attention to imprecise statements or outright mistakes. Their comments significantly increased the truthiness of this volume, though I alone accept responsibility for the content.
