FOREWORD (VOLUME 1)
Today, it seems, one can write nothing without some reference to Vatican II—certainly not a book of patristic texts, and in the hands of some authors, not even a grocery list. The Second Ecumenical Council of the Vatican now belongs to history. While it was yet in session there were undoubtedly some, even very capable men, who honestly believed that it would take a place beside Pistoia, so many of whose doctrines it seemed, through poor reporting, to be emulating. It is now clear to all, however, that it must be accorded its rightful place beside Nicaea and the rest of the properly approved Ecumenical Councils.
It will now be almost universally recognized that the late Council suffered a great deal from poor reporting and worse public relations. At no time did newspaper accounts ever seem to stumble against the important fact that the Second Vatican Council was the logical historical development of the First. On July ...
About The Faith of the Early Fathers, Volumes 1–3Providing a wide array of early church writings translated into English, Faith of the Early Fathers offers excerpts of critical theological developments in the first seven centuries of Christian history. From Clement of Rome and Polycarp to Augustine and Basil, and from Chrysostom to Ambrose and Jerome, these volumes track the formation of Christian doctrine—both the orthodox and the heretical. The passages are keyed to the numerical order established in M. J. Rouët de Journel’s Enchiridion Patristicum. But these volumes are not just a translation of that standard work. William A. Jurgens has investigated and selected the most frequently cited patristic passages, including much that is in Rouët’s volume and much that is not. All passages have been freshly and accurately translated from the best critical editions. Each selection is prefaced with a brief introduction addressing authorship, time and place of composition, and its purpose. Each volume is thoroughly and critically indexed by doctrine, Scripture, and general terms. |
