This book was in search of a publishing home until Jim Weaver shared our vision to publish it for the Asian North American church and beyond. Thank you, Jim, for believing in this project. Thanks to the wonderful team at Lexham Press, including Abby Salinger and Elliot Ritzema, for their diligence, guidance, and encouragement throughout the process.
I want to thank Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary for their generous sabbatical program. Thanks, in particular, to my preaching colleagues, Jeffrey Arthurs, Patricia Batten, and Pablo Jiménez for covering various responsibilities during the spring of 2019. Thanks to Daniel for writing this book with me. Your wisdom and experience in the Asian North American context are greatly appreciated. Thanks to my parents, Ki Wang and Taek Hee Kim, and my in-laws, Chung Hyun and Jung Sook Oh, for their constant encouragement. I also want to express appreciation to my wife, Sarah, who provides ample space for me to preach, teach, and write. Thank you, and I love you. And to my three sons, Ryan, Evan, and Aidan, you have sacrificed a lot in being the son of a pastor and seminary professor. It’s my honor to dedicate this book to you. Remember always that the most important thing in life is loving Jesus. I am so proud to be your father. Above all, I give thanks and glory to our triune God: Father, Son, ...
About Finding Our Voice: A Vision for Asian North American PreachingNo one preaches in a cultural vacuum. The message of what God has done in Christ is good news to all, but to have the greatest impact on its hearers—or even to be understood at all—it must be culturally contextualized. Finding Our Voice speaks clearly to an issue that has largely been ignored: preaching to Asian North American (ANA) contexts. In addition to reworking hermeneutics, theology, and homiletics for these overlooked contexts, Kim and Wong include examples of culturally-specific sermons and instructive questions for contextualizing one’s own sermons. Finding Our Voice is essential reading for all who preach and teach in ANA contexts. But by examining this kind of contextualization in action, all who preach in their own unique contexts will benefit from this approach. |
