Millions of readers identify CS Lewis as the author of the imaginary world of Narnia, the series of seven stories that began in 1950 with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and ended with The Last Battle in 1956. The Chronicles of Narnia secured his reputation as one of the most popular authors in the history of children’s literature. Lewis’s works have sold over a hundred million copies and have been translated into more than twenty languages, including Welsh, Chinese, Icelandic, and Hawaiian.
His popularity has continued to grow world-wide. Helped initially by the film Shadowlands in 1993 and the more recent film adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 2005—the first of Narnian stories to be made into movies. This will ensure that Lewis remains in the public imagination for the foreseeable future.
However, CS Lewis is much more than a successful children’s author. He gained a formidable reputation as an Oxford academic, wartime broadcaster, literary critic, poet, science-fiction writer, and man of letters with over thirty books and numerous articles to his credit.
From a self-confessed intellectual atheist, he went on to influence the lives of thousands of Christians and to become one of the greatest Christian writers of the twentieth century. CS Lewis has been described as ‘the Aquinas, the Augustine and the Aesop of contemporary evangelicalism’ and an ‘Apostle to the Skeptics.’
In his book Mere Christianity Lewis argued that Jesus was either mad, bad, or indeed exactly who he claimed to be—the Son of the living God!
This book tells the story of CS Lewis’ journey from atheism to being one of the most effective communicators of the Christian faith in the world.

About Travel with CS Lewis: The Creator of Narnia and the Most Quoted Christian of the 20th CenturyWhen C.S. Lewis’ grandfather hand-carved a wardrobe out of black oak to adorn his family home, he had little idea that it would provide his grandson with the inspiration for one of the world’s best-loved stories. The wardrobe stood for a time in the family home in Belfast, exerting a curious attraction for the children in the house. Two of Lewis’ cousins remember sitting inside it, the door ajar, while the young boy held them spellbound with his stories. This young storyteller would become the author of one of the most famous books in the history of children’s literature, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. In this guide, the author describes how the atheistic Clive Staples Lewis became the most widely-quoted Christian writer of the twentieth century, and explores the places that inspired Lewis’ stories. |
