Introduction

The Readings

After more than twenty-five years since the first book in the popular Day by Day series, Bible Commands is now the tenth volume. From those early volumes onwards, it has been the desire of the committee to encourage the daily reading of scripture and to provide a meditation derived from a particular passage. This latest volume continues that worthy tradition. Like all of its predecessors, it owes much to those who have contributed of their time, effort, and obvious gift to enable its compilation. We would acknowledge the debt we owe to those brethren and our thanks are extended to them. We know their labours to be a demonstration of their love for the Lord and evidence of their desire for the blessing of the Lord’s people.

Apart from the obvious contribution of the authors, the production of the book would not have been possible without the work of the usual team. The list of readings, from which this book was derived, was developed by Howard Coles. John Scarsbrook and Malcolm Horlock rendered their usual and valuable service at the proof reading stage. Derek Hill assisted us by setting the type from which the pages are printed and the cover design is again the work of Barney Trevivian. Once the book was complete Roy Hill played his part at the printing stage. We would express our sincere thanks to all for their valuable assistance.

In the upper room ministry of the Lord Jesus He revealed to His disciples the importance of the commandments that He had given them: ‘He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him’, John 14:21. To have the commandments is to know them and this should result in a desire to obey them in our daily lives. In this way we can express our love for the Saviour and, in return, experience His love for us and get to know Him better.
