This is the book I wish someone had handed to me years ago when I sat curled up alone in the fetal position on the floor of my tiny dorm room, blinking through tears, far from home yet closer to Home than I had ever been before. I had just welcomed Christ into my heart—Oh joy! Oh relief! And yet … Oh my … what a slow but steadily building trepidation I felt. Suddenly everything rolled together: the realization of what living this meaningful life would now actually mean. How messy! None of my family were believers. Very few of my friends. I was engaged to an atheist. I was a Shelley scholar, for goodness’ sake. And—alas!—an academic.

My rejoicing hallelujahs soon took on the minor tones of dread.

All this new Jesus stuff was just, well, so complicated.

And overwhelming.

And alienating.

How to be in the world and not of it? I mean, really? The Bible ends with “Lord Jesus, come.” There is no postscript that tells you how to break up with your unbelieving partner, until he does.

How do we get up off the floor, from wherever we have been flung and undone and made new by grace, and walk through the door that has been opened before us? Just how do we step into Oz, into Narnia, into this new Jerusalem disguised as our still very ordinary home or workplace or hangout, but now filled with gawkers or worse—those who do not see at all?

This is the book I wish I had to orient myself when I left the City of Man for the City of God. For when I had to navigate the roadblocks, potholes, ...
