Course Description

A Biblical Theology of End Times (BI290) examines eschatological passages in the ot, Jewish apocalyptic literature, and the nt in order to trace the development of beliefs about the end time. It compares and contrasts views from these passages and periods, with special emphases on the Synoptic Apocalypse and Paul’s letters to the Thessalonians. It concludes that the primary purpose of eschatology is to encourage right living.

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion you should be able to:

• Describe the place of biblical eschatology in the broader context of biblical and theological studies

• Discuss the ot foundations of eschatology

• Explain the primary characteristics of Jewish apocalyptic

• Trace the effects of ot eschatology and Jewish apocalyptic in the nt

• Compare and contrast Matthew’s, Mark’s, and Luke’s presentations of the Synoptic Apocalypse

• Summarize Paul’s eschatological teaching in his letters to Thessalonica

• Describe key eschatological features in Revelation

This course will give you a view of eschatology as seen through the whole of Scripture. Dr. Paulien begins with the roots of eschatology in Genesis and takes you through the prophecies in the Old Testament, Jewish apocalyptic literature, the Gospels, Paul’s letters, and finally to Revelation. He helps you understand the text by explaining what the biblical authors believed in their time and place about the last days.
