Foreword

Dr. Frey has provided the Nouthetic Counselor some new terms to express old concepts. He has suggested a structure, or pattern, by which the biblical counselor can practice the Nouthetic model. He has argued puissantly for the purity of the biblical model and raised afresh the thorny question of authority for the Christian who would counsel with eclectic or integrated models.

His work should be viewed as complimentary to the pioneering work of Dr. Jay Adams. Dr. Adams has been to Christian counseling what Luther was to soteriology and harmartiology. Dr. Frey, like the second generation Reformers, has provided a systemization of the work which has preceded him. Or, to use Dr. Adams’ own imagery, Frey has contributed to that building for which Adams constructed the superstructure.

As a second-generation biblical counselor myself, I commend Dr. Frey for his contribution. It is my prayer that his work will facilitate the adoption and implementation of the biblical (nouthetic) counseling model by many Christian professional and lay counselors.

May God be glorified and His people benefited as this work contributes to the equipping of the saints.
