To all saints who have preserved the old paths of biblical, Christian, and Reformed worship, so that newcomers like me had something substantive to cling onto—so that newcomers can continue to cling to Christ through our services.
Preface to the Second Edition
“Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together” (Ps. 34:3). I am so gratified that this little book you hold in your hands continues to be a source of instruction and inspiration to many, as together we worship the Lord. In updating it now as a second edition, I have kept the same structure and purpose of introducing the basics of our worship to those who are new to a Reformed church. In this second edition, though, I have updated the style since I have developed as a writer over the years. I have also expanded certain sections to give more clarity and depth as well as added a walking through a basic evening service. Finally, I have moved what used to be the last chapter on the minister’s attire into an appendix. In doing this I intend this book to be more useable by more ministers and churches. The result, I pray, is that this work leads many more people to grow in their magnification and exaltation of our wonderful Triune God.

About What to Expect in Reformed Worship, Second Edition: A Visitor’s Guide"Worship the Lord." Too many churches assume that those in their pews and those who pass through their doors know what worship is and why the Lord commands it. The purpose of this booklet, then, is to educate and acquaint members of Reformed churches but most of all those who inquire within their walls, with a basic knowledge of what Reformed churches mean when they say, "Worship the Lord." In knowing what to expect, the worshippers' response of praise and thanksgiving will be more active, joyful, and meaningful. |
