We are extremely grateful to 324 comeback churches, their leaders, and denominational agencies for taking the time to provide great insights and valuable information. Because of their commitment, others who desire to be renewed and revitalized will find practical strategies and help in the pages of this book.
We are also indebted to the NAMB Research Team, which Ed has the privilege of leading. Team members Richie Stanley, Marilynn Kelly, Chris Gaskin, Lizette Beard, and Jeff Farmer made phone calls, collected data, provided feedback, and served us and this project in so many practical ways. Also, we are indebted to Marvin Owen and Beau Abernathy for their help with the writing and editing process.
Finally, we are extremely grateful for the gift of our wives and children who often sacrifice so that we can fulfill the ministries that God has called us and allowed us to fulfill. They are a tremendous blessing from God!

In sports, we get excited about teams or players that make great comebacks, beat the odds, and do something that almost no one thought possible. About Comeback Churches: How 300 Churches Turned Around and Yours Can, TooResearch shows that over time, most churches plateau and then eventually decline. Typically, they start strong and experience periods of growth, then stagnate and lose members. Since 1991, the North American population has increased by 15 percent while the number of "unchurched" people has increased by 92 percent. Large church houses that were filled in the 1950s and `60s now hold a fraction of their capacity.
To counter this trend, authors Ed Stetzer and Mike Dodson surveyed 300 churches from across ten different denominations that recently achieved healthy evangelistic growth after a significant season of decline. What they have discovered is an exciting method of congregation reinvigoration that is shared in the new book entitled Comeback Churches. |
