Praise for The Forgotten Church

Glenn Daman takes us on a journey of understanding on why the rural church matters—how they need us, but also how we need them, perhaps more than ever.

Executive Director, Billy Graham Center

As one who married a farmer’s daughter and came to love the rural community from which she came, I recognize the wisdom of Glenn Daman’s book. Rural ministry doesn’t get the attention that urban ministry does, but the need is huge and the insights in The Forgotten Church point the way to faithful and effective service along countless two-laned roads.

I’m deeply grateful that many are moving to our growing cities to plant churches and reach a maximum number of people for Christ, but this good movement often comes at the cost or denigration of important work in rural communities. People who live in smaller towns and rural contexts are in desperate need of the gospel and willing shepherds ready to join God on mission. The church must send laborers to these sadly (and sinfully) forgotten places. This book is an important book that should be included in the syllabi of missions and church planting at schools, seminaries, and sending churches. Glenn Daman offers an important work on a vital mission field in the twenty-first century.

Vice-President of Communications, Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission; contributing editor, CT Pastors; and author of several books, including the forthcoming The Dignity Revolution: Reclaiming What It Means to Be Human

Glenn Daman continues to be an important voice in helping ministry leaders recognize both the strategic significance and distinctive dynamics of small, rural churches. In this latest contribution, he walks the reader through various issues that deserve more attention than they typically receive, ranging from historical background to theological foundations to representative case studies that illustrate how to contextualize challenging topics to a rural church setting.

RANDAL ROBERTS

President and Professor of Christian Spirituality, Western Seminary, Portland, OR

Many thanks to Glenn Daman for authoring this personal and informative review of the too-often-overlooked rural arena of church ministry. While the history of this field is rich with sentiments of life in a simpler time, its current challenges are complex, and our response is critical. Glenn writes convincingly as a farmer and pastor—his message is as timely as the harvest is ready!

What does rural America look like? The answer depends upon who you talk to. For those whose view has been shaped by popular media, it is a cross between Swamp People and Mayberry R.F.D. For others, it is a beautiful landscape populated by culturally backward gun lovers and political reactionaries. To those ...

About The Forgotten Church: Why Rural Ministry Matters for Every Church in America

Winner of Christianity Today's Award of Merit for The Church/Pastoral Leadership 2018

Whether it’s because of the 2016 Presidential election or books like “Hillbilly Elegy,” Americans are beginning to understand the tremendous influence people in rural areas have in our nation. But rural America—not urban America—is also the new center of poverty. Thus, the rural church stands at the crossroads of strength and struggle. It carries the gospel, the very hope and power needed. Yet its ministry efforts are hamstrung because urban and suburban churches often don’t realize their need for rural churches, and the rural church itself rarely understands its unique assets and values. The Forgotten Church addresses these problems and:

• provides an overview of rural ministry

• explores opportunities recent trends provide

• showcases the remarkable benefits of suburban, urban, and rural churches working together

This book is essential for any pastor—whether from the city or the sticks—because we are one body and we need each other.
