When the invitation arrived to contribute the volume on Hebrews in the Word Biblical Commentary, I was advancing some preliminary studies toward a monograph on the christology of Hebrews. That research had made me alert to the distinctiveness and richness of the writer’s understanding of Jesus and redemption, and to the depth of his pastoral concern for a community in crisis.
