Foreword

The Concordia Bible with Notes published by Concordia Publishing House in 1947 was a revised edition of the original Self-Explaining Bible published by the American Tract Society of New York. This edition proved to be very popular with many Bible students and was therefore sold out within a few years. Unfortunately it was not possible to reprint that edition because the plates were worn out. For this reason and because of repeated requests for such a work we decided to produce an entirely new edition based on the Revised Standard Version.

We asked Dr. Walter R. Roehrs and Dr. Martin H. Franzmann, eminent scholars of the Old and the New Testament, to prepare entirely new notes. The New Testament appeared in 1971.

We herewith present the notes to the entire Bible, under the title Concordia Self-Study Commentary.

Although the notes were prepared in reference to the text of the RSV, other versions of the Bible, particularly the King James Version, will be clearly explained by this commentary. The reader will find it helpful to have an appropriate version at hand while using the commentary.

Where words and phrases are quoted from the verses under immediate study, such words or phrases appear in italics. When other related Bible passages are quoted, they are given in quotation marks.

The introductions to the various Bible books have been prepared to present in brief form the background and important features of each book. The introductions will help the reader gain a clear impression of the theme and purpose of the book.

The notes provide in clear, concise language an overview of each section, followed by explanations of passages where further comment was deemed advisable.

The Concordia Self-Study Commentary will provide ideal help for the beginner, the advanced student, the teacher, and the Christian family.
