Breaking the Cycle of Generational Curses, Part One
Thank you, Doctor Lassiter, for reading our text today. You should have the privilege of standing here looking out over this congregation to see how good you look. Thank you for your presence today. I challenged you a week or so ago about being on time for this service. Most of you did better. Others of you will do better next Sunday. Today we are beginning a new series entitled “Breaking the Cycle.” And I want to begin this series focusing on “Breaking the Cycle of Generational Curses.” I need you to say that after me: breaking the cycle of generational curses. Amen!
I want to encourage you to be here every Sunday. This series has the potential to change your life. Recently, I read a story. A story that both caused me sadness but yet intrigued me. It was a story that reflected the downward spiral of a man, a young man, who was caught in the deadly quagmire of a generational curse. His name was Robert. You could say that Robert was born to die young. You could say that Robert was destined for failure and that his future would be short-lived. Robert’s parents were divorced when Robert was at an early age. His father, notorious for prostituting women, committed suicide when Robert was at the tender age of eight. At fourteen, Robert organized his very own street game, and it was known for its vicious violence and heinous hate crimes. At sixteen, Robert was sentenced to prison for three drive-by shootings and armed robbery. The day before he left for prison, Robert’s mother was murdered by a rival gang seeking revenge. His stepfather was gunned down by the same gang three and a half months later.
In prison, Robert was introduced to lifelong criminals worse than himself. And his bent toward fighting and scheming, even in the penal institution, caused him to be in and out of trouble. Someone decided to search Robert’s family tree. There they discovered ...
