NEW TEAM ASSUMES EDITORSHIP OF NEAS BULLETIN

Dear Reader:

With deepest appreciation for those who have preceded me, I have assumed the position of Managing Editor of the NEASB as of last November’s annual meeting of the Near East Archaeological Society Executive Board in New Orleans. In concert with an on-going analysis of NEAS goals designed to help us provide relevant and desired information both to those who work in the field and also to those whose teaching and administrative responsibilities keep them occupied here in the states, the “Wisdom of the Elders” suggested that we utilize all of our manifold talents to broaden our base.

Society’s current fascination with archaeology will without doubt soon fade. It may indeed last only long enough for the last glimmers of light to fade from the motion picture screens showing the Indiana Jones films! Still, while that interest persists, we might well have a window of opportunity to reach readers in the lay world in addition to our present readership.

Consequently, it was decided that the efforts of the society should henceforth be parceled out in three literary formats. The first, a much-needed and appreciated service to those younger scholars in our midst still seeking teaching positions and a doorway of opportunity into Academe, is the NEAS Newsletter. Masterfully edited by Gerald Mattingly, all of us have benefited from the many germane academic helps that he has brought to our attention.

The second, for the benefit of “dirt diggers”, academic libraries and colleagues at other digs, is the continuation of the NEAS Bulletin. Those of you who have contacted us over the past year or so deserve to be able to rest comfortably in the assurance that with this issue we have resumed a publication schedule which we expect to move us steadily forward into full compliance with our responsibility to present in published form as quickly as possible the preliminary information from various sites as it becomes available.

Finally, in the hope of accomplishing a number of additional and valuable objectives, we have authorized the introduction of a new journal, dedicated to benefiting the entire spectrum of students of the Scriptures who believe that archaeology can illuminate and enliven the Bible at any ...
