47. “The Chief Priests, therefore, and the Pharisees gathered a Council.” The right to assemble a Council of the Sanhedrim or 72, was vested exclusively in the High Priest. But, the Pharisees are said to convene it; because, it was at their instigation, to whom the matter was reported (v. 46), the High Priest convened it. “The Chief Priests” were Caiphas and Annas.
