John 1:1–5

Prologue: Christ, the Eternal Word

In the beginning the Word already existed.

The Word was with God,

and the Word was God.

He existed in the beginning with God.

God created everything through him,

and nothing was created except through him.

The Word gave life to everything that was created,*

and his life brought light to everyone.

The light shines in the darkness,

and the darkness can never extinguish it.*

And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. And the light shineth in the darkness; and the darkness apprehended it not.

John 1:1–5 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things received being through him, and without him not one thing received being which has received being. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

And the light appears in darkness, and the darkness apprehended it not.

John 1:1–5 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was already with God in the beginning.

Everything came into existence through him. Not one thing that exists was made without him.

That light shines in the darkness,

yet the darkness did not overcome it.

John 1:1–5 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.
