Isaiah 45:5–9

I am the Lord;

there is no other God.

I have equipped you for battle,

though you don’t even know me,

so all the world from east to west

will know there is no other God.

I am the Lord, and there is no other.

I create the light and make the darkness.

I send good times and bad times.

I, the Lord, am the one who does these things.

“Open up, O heavens,

and pour out your righteousness.

Let the earth open wide

so salvation and righteousness can sprout up together.

I, the Lord, created them.

“What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator.

Does a clay pot argue with its maker?

Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying,

‘Stop, you’re doing it wrong!’

Does the pot exclaim,

‘How clumsy can you be?’

Isaiah 45:5–9 — The New International Version (NIV)

I am the Lord, and there is no other;

apart from me there is no God.

I will strengthen you,

though you have not acknowledged me,

so that from the rising of the sun

to the place of its setting

people may know there is none besides me.

I am the Lord, and there is no other.

I form the light and create darkness,

I bring prosperity and create disaster;

I, the Lord, do all these things.

“You heavens above, rain down my righteousness;

let the clouds shower it down.

Let the earth open wide,

let salvation spring up,

let righteousness flourish with it;

I, the Lord, have created it.

“Woe to those who quarrel with their Maker,

those who are nothing but potsherds

among the potsherds on the ground.

Does the clay say to the potter,

‘What are you making?’

Does your work say,

‘The potter has no hands’?

Isaiah 45:5–9 — English Standard Version (ESV)

I am the Lord, and there is no other,

besides me there is no God;

I equip you, though you do not know me,

that people may know, from the rising of the sun

and from the west, that there is none besides me;

I am the Lord, and there is no other.

I form light and create darkness;

I make well-being and create calamity;

I am the Lord, who does all these things.

“Shower, O heavens, from above,

and let the clouds rain down righteousness;

let the earth open, that salvation and righteousness may bear fruit;

let the earth cause them both to sprout;

I the Lord have created it.

“Woe to him who strives with him who formed him,

a pot among earthen pots!

Does the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’

or ‘Your work has no handles’?

Isaiah 45:5–9 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

I am the Lord, and there is none else,

There is no God beside me:

I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:

That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west,

That there is none beside me.

I am the Lord, and there is none else.

I form the light, and create darkness:

I make peace, and create evil:

I the Lord do all these things.

Drop down, ye heavens, from above,

And let the skies pour down righteousness:

Let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation,

And let righteousness spring up together;

I the Lord have created it.

Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker!

Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth.

Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou?

Or thy work, He hath no hands?

Isaiah 45:5–9 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

I am the Lord, and there is no other;

There is no God besides Me.

I will gird you, though you have not known Me, That they may know from the rising of the sun to its setting

That there is none besides Me.

I am the Lord, and there is no other;

I form the light and create darkness,

I make peace and create calamity;

I, the Lord, do all these things.’

“Rain down, you heavens, from above,

And let the skies pour down righteousness;

Let the earth open, let them bring forth salvation,

And let righteousness spring up together.

I, the Lord, have created it.

“Woe to him who strives with his Maker!

Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth!

Shall the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’

Or shall your handiwork say, ‘He has no hands’?

Isaiah 45:5–9 — New Century Version (NCV)

I am the Lord. There is no other God;

I am the only God.

I will make you strong,

even though you don’t know me,

so that everyone will know

there is no other God.

From the east to the west they will know

I alone am the Lord.

I made the light and the darkness.

I bring peace, and I cause troubles.

I, the Lord, do all these things.

“Sky above, make victory fall like rain;

clouds, pour down victory.

Let the earth receive it,

and let salvation grow,

and let victory grow with it.

I, the Lord, have created it.

“How terrible it will be for those who argue with the God who made them.

They are like a piece of broken pottery among many pieces.

The clay does not ask the potter,

‘What are you doing?’

The thing that is made doesn’t say to its maker,

‘You have no hands.’

Isaiah 45:5–9 — American Standard Version (ASV)

I am Jehovah, and there is none else; besides me there is no God. I will gird thee, though thou hast not known me; that they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none besides me: I am Jehovah, and there is none else. I form the light, and create darkness; I make peace, and create evil. I am Jehovah, that doeth all these things.

Distil, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, that it may bring forth salvation, and let it cause righteousness to spring up together; I, Jehovah, have created it.

Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! a potsherd among the potsherds of the earth! Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?

Isaiah 45:5–9 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

I am Jehovah, and there is none else; there is no God beside me: I girded thee, and thou hast not known me; —that they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the going down, that there is none beside me. I am Jehovah, and there is none else; forming the light and creating darkness, making peace and creating evil: I, Jehovah, do all these things. Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness; let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation, and with it let righteousness spring up. I, Jehovah, have created it. Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let a potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that formeth it, What makest thou? Or thy work, He hath no hands?

Isaiah 45:5–9 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

I am the Lord, and there is no other.

There is no other God besides me.

I will strengthen you, although you don’t know me,

so that from the east to the west people will know

that there is no God except me.

I am the Lord, and there is no other.

I make light and create darkness.

I make blessings and create disasters.

I, the Lord, do all these things.

Rain down from above, you heavens,

and pour down righteousness, you skies.

Let the earth open.

Let salvation and righteousness sprout.

Let them spring up.

I, the Lord, have created them.

How horrible it will be for the one who quarrels with his maker.

He is pottery among other earthenware pots.

Does the clay ask the one who shapes it, “What are you making?”

Does your work say to you, “There are no handles”?

Isaiah 45:5–9 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

I am Yahweh, and there is no other;

there is no God but Me.

I will strengthen you,

though you do not know Me,

so that all may know from the rising of the sun to its setting

that there is no one but Me.

I am Yahweh, and there is no other.

I form light and create darkness,

I make success and create disaster;

I, Yahweh, do all these things.

“Heavens, sprinkle from above,

and let the skies shower righteousness.

Let the earth open up

so that salvation will sprout

and righteousness will spring up with it.

I, Yahweh, have created it.

“Woe to the one who argues with his Maker—

one clay pot among many.

Does clay say to the one forming it,

‘What are you making?’

Or does your work say,

‘He has no hands’?

Isaiah 45:5–9 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

I am the Lord, and there is no other;

besides me there is no god.

I arm you, though you do not know me,

so that they may know, from the rising of the sun

and from the west, that there is no one besides me;

I am the Lord, and there is no other.

I form light and create darkness,

I make weal and create woe;

I the Lord do all these things.

Shower, O heavens, from above,

and let the skies rain down righteousness;

let the earth open, that salvation may spring up,

and let it cause righteousness to sprout up also;

I the Lord have created it.

Woe to you who strive with your Maker,

earthen vessels with the potter!

Does the clay say to the one who fashions it, “What are you making”?

or “Your work has no handles”?

Isaiah 45:5–9 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

I am Yahweh, and there is none besides me;

besides me there is no god.

I gird you though you do not know me,

so that they may know from the rising of the sun

and from the west that there is none besides me;

I am Yahweh and there is none besides me.

I form light and I create darkness;

I make peace and I create evil;

I am Yahweh; I do all these things.

Trickle, O heavens, from above,

and let clouds trickle with righteousness;

let the earth open so that salvation may be fruitful,

and let it cause righteousness to sprout along with it.

I myself, Yahweh, have created it.

Woe to the one who strives with his maker,

a potsherd among potsherds of earth!

Does the clay say to the one who fashions it,

‘What are you making?’

and ‘Your work has no hands’?

Isaiah 45:5–9 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

I am the Lord. There is no other Lord.

I am the one and only God.

You do not know anything about me.

But I will make you strong.

Then people will know there is no God but me.

Everyone from where the sun rises in the east

to where it sets in the west will know it.

I am the Lord.

There is no other Lord.

I cause light to shine. I also create darkness.

I bring good times. I also create hard times.

I do all of those things. I am the Lord.

“ ‘Rain down godliness, you heavens above.

Let the clouds shower it down.

Let the earth open wide to receive it.

Let freedom spring to life.

Let godliness grow along with it.

I have created all of those things.

I am the Lord.’ ”

How terrible it will be for anyone who argues with his Maker!

He is like a broken piece of pottery lying on the ground.

Does clay say to a potter,

“What are you making?”

Does a pot say,

“You don’t have any skill”?

Isaiah 45:5–9 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

“I am the Lord, and there is no other;

Besides Me there is no God.

I will gird you, though you have not known Me;

That men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun

That there is no one besides Me.

I am the Lord, and there is no other,

The One forming light and creating darkness,

Causing well-being and creating calamity;

I am the Lord who does all these.

Drip down, O heavens, from above,

And let the clouds pour down righteousness;

Let the earth open up and salvation bear fruit,

And righteousness spring up with it.

I, the Lord, have created it.

Woe to the one who quarrels with his Maker

An earthenware vessel among the vessels of earth!

Will the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you doing?’

Or the thing you are making say, ‘He has no hands’?
