Zephaniah 1:1–5

1 The word of the Lord which came to Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, in the days of aJosiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.

The Great Day of the Lord

2 “I will 1utterly consume everything

From the face of the land,”

Says the Lord;

3 “I bwill consume man and beast;

I will consume the birds of the heavens,

The fish of the sea,

And the 2stumbling blocks along with the wicked.

I will cut off man from the face of the 3land,”

Says the Lord.

4 “I will stretch out My hand against Judah,

And against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

4I will cut off every trace of Baal from this place,

The names of the cidolatrous 5priests with the pagan priests—

5 Those dwho worship the host of heaven on the housetops;

Those who worship and swear oaths by the Lord,

Zephaniah 1:1–5 — The New International Version (NIV)

The word of the Lord that came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, during the reign of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah:

“I will sweep away everything

from the face of the earth,”

declares the Lord.

“I will sweep away both man and beast;

I will sweep away the birds in the sky

and the fish in the sea—

and the idols that cause the wicked to stumble.”

“When I destroy all mankind

on the face of the earth,”

declares the Lord,

“I will stretch out my hand against Judah

and against all who live in Jerusalem.

I will destroy every remnant of Baal worship in this place,

the very names of the idolatrous priests—

those who bow down on the roofs

to worship the starry host,

those who bow down and swear by the Lord

and who also swear by Molek,

“I will sweep away everything

I will sweep away the birds of the sky and the fish in the sea.

I will reduce the wicked to heaps of rubble,

and I will wipe humanity from the face of the earth,” says the Lord.

“I will crush Judah and Jerusalem with my fist

and destroy every last trace of their Baal worship.

I will put an end to all the idolatrous priests,

so that even the memory of them will disappear.

For they go up to their roofs

and bow down to the sun, moon, and stars.

They claim to follow the Lord,

but then they worship Molech, too.

This is the word that the Lord spoke to Zephaniah, who was the son of Cushi, the grandson of Gedaliah, and the great-grandson of Amariah, son of Hezekiah. The Lord spoke his word in the days of Judah’s King Josiah, son of Amon. 

“I will gather everything on the face of the earth 

and put an end to it,” declares the Lord

“I will put an end to humans and animals. 

I will put an end to 

the birds in the sky, 

the fish in the sea, 

and the sins that make people fall, together with the sinners. 

I will remove all people from the face of the earth,” declares the Lord

“I will use my power against Judah 

and against those who live in Jerusalem. 

I will remove the faithful few of Baal from this place 

and the names of the pagan priests along with my priests. 

I will remove those who worship all the stars in the sky on their rooftops 

and those who worship by swearing loyalty to the Lord 

while also swearing loyalty to the god Milcom.

A message came to Zephaniah from the Lord. He was the son of Cushi. Cushi was the son of Gedaliah. Gedaliah was the son of Amariah. Amariah was the son of King Hezekiah. The Lord spoke to Zephaniah during the rule of Josiah. He was king of Judah and the son of Amon.

“I will sweep away everything

from the face of the earth,”

announces the Lord.

“I will destroy people and animals alike.

I will wipe out the birds of the air

and the fish in the waters.

I will destroy sinful people along with their gods.

I will wipe man off the face of the earth,”

announces the Lord.

“I will reach out my powerful hand against Judah.

I will punish all those who live in Jerusalem.

I will cut off from that place

what is left of Baal worship.

The officials and priests who serve other gods

will be removed.

I will wipe out those who bow down on their roofs

to worship all of the stars.

I will destroy those who take oaths

not only in my name but also in the name of Molech.
