Romans 1:1–32

Greeting

1 Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, acalled to be an apostle, bseparated to the gospel of God cwhich He promised before dthrough His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who 1was eborn of the seed of David according to the flesh, and fdeclared to be the Son of God with power according gto the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. Through Him hwe have received grace and apostleship for iobedience to the faith among all nations jfor His name, among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ;

To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, kcalled to be saints:

lGrace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Desire to Visit Rome

First, mI thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that nyour faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. For oGod is my witness, pwhom I serve 2with my spirit in the gospel of His Son, that qwithout ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers, 10 making request if, by some means, now at last I may find a way in the will of God to come to you. 11 For I long to see you, that rI may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established—12 that is, that I may be encouraged together with you by sthe mutual faith both of you and me.

13 Now I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that I often planned to come to you (but twas hindered until now), that I might have some ufruit among you also, just as among the other Gentiles. 14 I am a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to wise and to unwise. 15 So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome also.

The Just Live by Faith

16 For vI am not ashamed of the gospel 3of Christ, for wit is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, xfor the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For yin it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, z“The just shall live by faith.”

God’s Wrath on Unrighteousness

18 aFor the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and bunrighteousness of men, who 4suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because cwhat may be known of God is 5manifest 6in them, for dGod has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world eHis invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and 7Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but fbecame futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 gProfessing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the hincorruptible iGod into an image made like 8corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

24 jTherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, kto dishonor their bodies lamong themselves, 25 who exchanged mthe truth of God nfor the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to ovile passions. For even their 9women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the 1men, leaving the natural use of the 2woman, burned in their lust for one another, 1men with 1men committing what is shameful, …

Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be pwise in what is good, and 5simple concerning evil. 20 And qthe God of peace rwill crush Satan under your feet shortly.

sThe grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

Greetings from Paul’s Friends

21 tTimothy, my fellow worker, and uLucius, vJason, and wSosipater, my countrymen, greet you.

25 7Now ato Him who is able to establish you baccording to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, caccording to the revelation of the mystery dkept secret since the world began 26 but enow made manifest, and by the prophetic Scriptures made known to all nations, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, for fobedience to the faith—27 to gGod, alone wise, be glory through Jesus Christ forever. Amen.

Romans 6:1–23

Dead to Sin, Alive to God

6 What shall we say then? aShall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who bdied to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that cas many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus dwere baptized into His death? Therefore we were eburied with Him through baptism into death, that fjust as Christ was raised from the dead by gthe glory of the Father, heven so we also should walk in newness of life.

iFor if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that jour old man was crucified with Him, that kthe body of sin might be 1done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For lhe who has died has been 2freed from sin. Now mif we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that nChrist, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, oHe died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, pHe lives to God. 11 Likewise you also, 3reckon yourselves to be qdead indeed to sin, but ralive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

12 sTherefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your tmembers as 4instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but upresent yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as 4instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For vsin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

From Slaves of Sin to Slaves of God

15 What then? Shall we sin wbecause we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that xto whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart ythat form of doctrine to which you were 5delivered. 18 And zhaving been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness 6for holiness.

20 For when you were aslaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 bWhat fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For cthe end of those things is death. 22 But now dhaving been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit 7to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. 23 For ethe wages of sin is death, but fthe 8gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
