Romans 15:3–4
Romans 15:3–4 — The New International Version (NIV)
3 For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.” 4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.
Romans 15:3–4 — English Standard Version (ESV)
3 For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.” 4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
Romans 15:3–4 — King James Version (KJV 1900)
3 For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. 4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
Romans 15:3–4 — New Living Translation (NLT)
3 For even Christ didn’t live to please himself. As the Scriptures say, “The insults of those who insult you, O God, have fallen on me.” 4 Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled.
Romans 15:3–4 — New Century Version (NCV)
3 Even Christ did not live to please himself. It was as the Scriptures said: “When people insult you, it hurts me.” 4 Everything that was written in the past was written to teach us. The Scriptures give us patience and encouragement so that we can have hope.
Romans 15:3–4 — American Standard Version (ASV)
3 For Christ also pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell upon me. 4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that through patience and through comfort of the scriptures we might have hope.
Romans 15:3–4 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)
3 For the Christ also did not please himself; but according as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproach thee have fallen upon me. 4 For as many things as have been written before have been written for our instruction, that through endurance and through encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.
Romans 15:3–4 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)
3 Christ did not think only of himself. Rather, as Scripture says, “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”
4 Everything written long ago was written to teach us so that we would have confidence through the endurance and encouragement which the Scriptures give us.
Romans 15:3–4 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
3 For even the Messiah did not please Himself. On the contrary, as it is written, The insults of those who insult You have fallen on Me. 4 For whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that we may have hope through endurance and through the encouragement from the Scriptures.
Romans 15:3–4 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
3 For Christ did not please himself; but, as it is written, “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.” 4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.
Romans 15:3–4 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)
3 For even Christ did not please himself, but just as it is written, “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.” 4 For whatever was written beforehand was written for our instruction, in order that through patient endurance and through the encouragement of the scriptures we may have hope.
Romans 15:3–4 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)
3 Even Christ did not please himself. It is written, “Those who make fun of you have made fun of me also.” 4 Everything that was written in the past was written to teach us. The Scriptures give us strength to go on. They cheer us up and give us hope.
Romans 15:3–4 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)
3 For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.”
