The People Complain Harshly

13 “Your zwords have been 3harsh against Me,”

Says the Lord,

Yet you say,

‘What have we spoken against You?’

14 aYou have said,

‘It is useless to serve God;

What profit is it that we have kept His ordinance,

And that we have walked as mourners

Before the Lord of hosts?

15 So now bwe call the proud blessed,

For those who do wickedness are 4raised up;

They even ctempt God and go free.’ ”

Malachi 3:13–15 — The New International Version (NIV)

13 “You have spoken arrogantly against me,” says the Lord.

“Yet you ask, ‘What have we said against you?’

14 “You have said, ‘It is futile to serve God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the Lord Almighty? 15 But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly evildoers prosper, and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it.’ ”

Malachi 3:13–15 — English Standard Version (ESV)

13 “Your words have been hard against me, says the Lord. But you say, ‘How have we spoken against you?’ 14 You have said, ‘It is vain to serve God. What is the profit of our keeping his charge or of walking as in mourning before the Lord of hosts? 15 And now we call the arrogant blessed. Evildoers not only prosper but they put God to the test and they escape.’ ”

Malachi 3:13–15 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

13 Your words have been stout against me, saith the Lord.

Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee?

14 Ye have said, It is vain to serve God:

And what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance,

And that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts?

15 And now we call the proud happy;

Yea, they that work wickedness are set up;

Yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.

Malachi 3:13–15 — New Living Translation (NLT)

13 “You have said terrible things about me,” says the Lord.

“But you say, ‘What do you mean? What have we said against you?’

14 “You have said, ‘What’s the use of serving God? What have we gained by obeying his commands or by trying to show the Lord of Heaven’s Armies that we are sorry for our sins? 15 From now on we will call the arrogant blessed. For those who do evil get rich, and those who dare God to punish them suffer no harm.’ ”

Malachi 3:13–15 — New Century Version (NCV)

13 The Lord says, “You have said terrible things about me.

“But you ask, ‘What have we said about you?’

14 “You have said, ‘It is useless to serve God. It did no good to obey his laws and to show the Lord All-Powerful that we were sorry for what we did. 15 So we say that proud people are happy. Evil people succeed. They challenge God and get away with it.’ ”

Malachi 3:13–15 — American Standard Version (ASV)

13 Your words have been stout against me, saith Jehovah. Yet ye say, What have we spoken against thee? 14 Ye have said, It is vain to serve God; and what profit is it that we have kept his charge, and that we have walked mournfully before Jehovah of hosts? 15 and now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are built up; yea, they tempt God, and escape.

Malachi 3:13–15 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

13 Your words have been stout against me, saith Jehovah; but ye say, What have we been speaking against thee? 14 Ye say, It is vain to serve God; and what profit is it that we keep his charge, and that we walk mournfully before Jehovah of hosts? 15 And now we hold the proud for happy; yea, they that work wickedness are built up; yea, they tempt God, and they escape.

Malachi 3:13–15 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

13 “You have used harsh words against me,” says the Lord

“You ask, ‘How have we spoken against you?’

14 “You have said, ‘It’s pointless to serve God. What do we gain if we meet his standards or if we walk around feeling sorry for what we’ve done? 15 So now we call arrogant people blessed. Not only are evildoers encouraged, they even test God and get away with it.’ ”

Malachi 3:13–15 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

13 “Your words against Me are harsh,” says the Lord.

Yet you ask: “What have we spoken against You?”

14 You have said: “It is useless to serve God. What have we gained by keeping His requirements and walking mournfully before the Lord of Hosts? 15 So now we consider the arrogant to be fortunate. Not only do those who commit wickedness prosper, they even test God and escape.”

Malachi 3:13–15 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

13 You have spoken harsh words against me, says the Lord. Yet you say, “How have we spoken against you?” 14 You have said, “It is vain to serve God. What do we profit by keeping his command or by going about as mourners before the Lord of hosts? 15 Now we count the arrogant happy; evildoers not only prosper, but when they put God to the test they escape.”

Malachi 3:13–15 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

13 “Your words have been harsh against me,” says Yahweh. “But you say, ‘How have we spoken together against you?’ 14 You have said, ‘It is useless to serve God! What is the gain if we keep his requirements, and if we walk as mourners before Yahweh of hosts? 15 And now we are calling the arrogant blessed! Not only do those who do wickedness prosper; they also test God and they escape!’ ”

Malachi 3:13–15 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

13 “You have spoken bad things against me,” says the Lord.

“But you ask, ‘What have we spoken against you?’

14 “You have said, ‘It is useless to serve God. What did we gain by obeying his laws? And what did we get by pretending to be sad in front of the Lord? 15 But now we call proud people blessed. Things go well with those who do what is evil. And God doesn’t even punish those who argue with him.’ ”

Malachi 3:13–15 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

13 “Your words have been arrogant against Me,” says the Lord. “Yet you say, ‘What have we spoken against You?’

14 “You have said, ‘It is vain to serve God; and what profit is it that we have kept His charge, and that we have walked in mourning before the Lord of hosts?

15 ‘So now we call the arrogant blessed; not only are the doers of wickedness built up but they also test God and escape.’ ”
