Luke 9:57–10:12

True Cost of Discipleship

Matt. 8:18–22

57 zNow it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.”

58 And Jesus said to him, Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man ahas nowhere to lay His head.”

59 bThen He said to another, Follow Me.”

But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”

60 Jesus said to him, Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.”

61 And another also said, “Lord, cI will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.”

62 But Jesus said to him, No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is dfit for the kingdom of God.”

Mission of the Seventy

10 After these things the Lord appointed 1seventy others also, and asent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. Then He said to them, bThe harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore cpray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. Go your way; dbehold, I send you out as lambs among wolves. eCarry neither money bag, knapsack, nor sandals; and fgreet no one along the road. gBut whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it; if not, it will return to you. hAnd remain in the same house, ieating and drinking such things as they give, for jthe laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house. Whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. kAnd heal the sick there, and say to them, lThe kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whatever city you enter, and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11 mThe very dust of your city which clings to 2us we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near you.’ 12 3But I say to you that nit will be more tolerable in that Day for Sodom than for that city.
