Luke 24:1–53

The Resurrection

Matt. 28:1–8; Mark 16:1–8; John 20:1–10

24 Now aon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, 1and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bbringing the spices which they had prepared. cBut they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. dThen they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. And it happened, as they were 2greatly perplexed about this, that ebehold, two men stood by them in shining garments. Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen! fRemember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, The Son of Man must be gdelivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’ ”

And hthey remembered His words. iThen they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, jJoanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. 11 kAnd their words seemed to them like 3idle tales, and they did not believe them. 12 lBut Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths 4lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.

Christ Appears on the Road to Emmaus

Mark 16:12, 13

13 mNow behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was 5seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 15 So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that nJesus Himself drew near and went with them. 16 But otheir eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.

17 And He said to them, What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you 6walk and are sad?”

18 Then the one pwhose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?”

19 And He said to them, What things?”

So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, qwho was a Prophet rmighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 sand how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. 21 But we were hoping tthat it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. 22 Yes, and ucertain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. 23 When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. 24 And vcertain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.”

25 Then He said to them, O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 wOught not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His xglory?” 27 And beginning at yMoses and zall the Prophets, He 7expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

28 Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and aHe 8indicated that He would have gone farther. 29 But bthey constrained Him, saying, c“Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them.

30 Now it came to pass, as dHe sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.

32 And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”

The Proof of His Resurrection

Mark 16:14; John 20:19–23; 1 Cor. 15:5

33 So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and ehas appeared to Simon!” 35 And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was 9known to them in the breaking of bread.

36 fNow as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, Peace to you.” 37 But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen ga spirit. 38 And He said to them, Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. hHandle Me and see, for a ispirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.”

40 1When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41 But while they still did not believe jfor joy, and marveled, He said to them, kHave you any food here?” 42 So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish 2and some honeycomb. 43 lAnd He took it and ate in their presence.

John 20:1–21:25

The Resurrection of Christ

Matt. 28:1–8; Mark 16:1–8; Luke 24:1–12

20 Now on the afirst day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the bstone had been taken away from the tomb. Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the cother disciple, dwhom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”

ePeter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. And he, stooping down and looking in, saw fthe linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and gthe 1handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. Then the hother disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not 2know the iScripture, that He must rise again from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.

Christ Appears to Mary Magdalene

11 jBut Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”

She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”

14 kNow when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and ldid not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”

She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”

16 Jesus said to her, mMary!”

She turned and said to 3Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).

17 Jesus said to her, Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet nascended to My Father; but go to oMy brethren and say to them, pI am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to qMy God and your God.’ ”

18 rMary Magdalene came and told the 4disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.

Mark 16:14; Luke 24:36–43

19 sThen, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were 5assembled, for tfear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, uPeace be with you.” 20 When He had said this, He vshowed them His hands and His side. wThen the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

21 So Jesus said to them again, Peace to you! xAs the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 yIf you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

24 Now Thomas, zcalled the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”

So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

Christ Appears to the Disciples (Thomas Present)

1 Cor. 15:5

26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and areach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be bunbelieving, but believing.”

28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Jesus said to him, 6Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. cBlessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

The Purpose of John’s Gospel

30 And dtruly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 ebut these are written that fyou may believe that Jesus gis the Christ, the Son of God, hand that believing you may have life in His name.

Christ Appears to the Seven Disciples

21 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the aSea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: Simon Peter, bThomas called the Twin, cNathanael of dCana in Galilee, ethe sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”

They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and 1immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples fdid not know that it was Jesus. Then gJesus said to them, Children, have you any food?”

They answered Him, “No.”

And He said to them, hCast the net on the right side of the boat
