Jeremiah 1:1–6
1 The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were ain Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, 2 to whom the word of the Lord came in the days of bJosiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, cin the thirteenth year of his reign. 3 It came also in the days of dJehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, euntil the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah, king of Judah, funtil the carrying away of Jerusalem captive gin the fifth month.
4 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
5 “Before I hformed you in the womb iI knew you;
Before you were born I jsanctified 1you;
I 2ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth.”

5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,

6 “Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.”

1 These are the words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests from the town of Anathoth in the land of Benjamin. 2 The Lord first gave messages to Jeremiah during the thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah. 3 The Lord’s messages continued throughout the reign of King Jehoiakim, Josiah’s son, until the eleventh year of the reign of King Zedekiah, another of Josiah’s sons. In August of that eleventh year the people of Jerusalem were taken away as captives.
4 The Lord gave me this message:
5 “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb.
Before you were born I set you apart
and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.”
6 “O Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I can’t speak for you! I’m too young!”

1 These are the words Jeremiah received from the Lord. He was the son of Hilkiah. Jeremiah was one of the priests at Anathoth. That’s a town in the territory of Benjamin. 2 A message came to Jeremiah from the Lord. It came in the 13th year that Josiah was king over Judah. Josiah was the son of Amon.
3 The Lord’s message also came to Jeremiah during the whole time Jehoiakim was king over Judah. Jehoiakim was the son of Josiah. The Lord continued to speak to Jeremiah until the fifth month of the 11th year that Zedekiah was king over Judah. That’s when the people of Jerusalem were forced to leave their country. Zedekiah was the son of Josiah. Here is what Jeremiah said.
4 A message came to me from the Lord. He said,
5 “Before I formed you in your mother’s body I chose you.
Before you were born I set you apart to serve me.
I appointed you to be a prophet to the nations.”
6 “You are my Lord and King,” I said. “I don’t know how to speak. I’m only a child.”
