Hosea 13:5–8 — The New International Version (NIV)

I cared for you in the wilderness,

in the land of burning heat.

When I fed them, they were satisfied;

when they were satisfied, they became proud;

then they forgot me.

So I will be like a lion to them,

like a leopard I will lurk by the path.

Like a bear robbed of her cubs,

I will attack them and rip them open;

like a lion I will devour them—

a wild animal will tear them apart.

Hosea 13:5–8 — English Standard Version (ESV)

It was I who knew you in the wilderness,

in the land of drought;

but when they had grazed, they became full,

they were filled, and their heart was lifted up;

therefore they forgot me.

So I am to them like a lion;

like a leopard I will lurk beside the way.

I will fall upon them like a bear robbed of her cubs;

I will tear open their breast,

and there I will devour them like a lion,

as a wild beast would rip them open.

Hosea 13:5–8 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

I did know thee in the wilderness,

In the land of great drought.

According to their pasture, so were they filled;

They were filled, and their heart was exalted;

Therefore have they forgotten me.

Therefore I will be unto them as a lion:

As a leopard by the way will I observe them:

I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps,

And will rend the caul of their heart,

And there will I devour them like a lion:

The wild beast shall tear them.

Hosea 13:5–8 — New Living Translation (NLT)

I took care of you in the wilderness,

in that dry and thirsty land.

But when you had eaten and were satisfied,

you became proud and forgot me.

So now I will attack you like a lion,

like a leopard that lurks along the road.

Like a bear whose cubs have been taken away,

I will tear out your heart.

I will devour you like a hungry lioness

and mangle you like a wild animal.

Hosea 13:5–8 — New Century Version (NCV)

I cared for them in the desert

where it was hot and dry.

I gave them food, and they became full and satisfied.

But then they became too proud and forgot me.

That is why I will be like a lion to them,

like a leopard waiting by the road.

I will attack like a bear robbed of her cubs,

ripping their bodies open.

I will devour them like a lion

and tear them apart like a wild animal.

Hosea 13:5–8 — American Standard Version (ASV)

I did know thee in the wilderness, in the land of great drought. According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted: therefore have they forgotten me. Therefore am I unto them as a lion; as a leopard will I watch by the way; I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart; and there will I devour them like a lioness; the wild beast shall tear them.

Hosea 13:5–8 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

I knew thee in the wilderness, in the land of drought. According to their pasture, they became full; they became full, and their heart was exalted: therefore have they forgotten me. And I will be unto them as a lion; as a leopard I will lurk for them by the way; I will meet them as a bear bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the covering of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lioness: the beast of the field shall tear them.

Hosea 13:5–8 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

I took care of youin the desert, in a dry land.

When I fed you, you were full.

When you were full, you became arrogant.

That is why you forgot me.

So I will be like a lion.

Like a leopard I will wait by the road to ambush you.

Like a bear that has lost her cubs, I will attack you.

I will rip you open.

Like a lion I will devour you.

Like a wild animal I will tear you apart.

Hosea 13:5–8 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

I knew you in the wilderness,

in the land of drought.

When they had pasture,

they became satisfied;

they were satisfied,

and their hearts became proud.

Therefore they forgot Me.

So I will be like a lion to them;

I will lurk like a leopard on the path.

I will attack them

like a bear robbed of her cubs

and tear open the rib cage over their hearts.

I will devour them there like a lioness,

like a wild beast that would rip them open.

Hosea 13:5–8 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

It was I who fed you in the wilderness,

in the land of drought.

When I fed them, they were satisfied;

they were satisfied, and their heart was proud;

therefore they forgot me.

So I will become like a lion to them,

like a leopard I will lurk beside the way.

I will fall upon them like a bear robbed of her cubs,

and will tear open the covering of their heart;

there I will devour them like a lion,

as a wild animal would mangle them.

Hosea 13:5–8 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

I fed you in the desert,

in the land of drought.

When I fed them, they were satisfied;

they were satisfied and their heart was lifted up;

therefore they forgot me.

And I will be like a lion to them;

I lie in wait beside the way, like a leopard.

I will attack them like a bear robbed of her offspring,

and I will tear open the covering of their heart;

there I will devour them like a lion,

like an animal of the field would mutilate them.

Hosea 13:5–8 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

I took care of you in the desert.

It was a land of burning heat.

I fed you until you were satisfied.

Then you became proud.

You forgot all about me.

So I will leap on you like a lion.

I will hide and wait

beside the road like a leopard.

I will attack you like a bear

that is robbed of her cubs.

I will rip you wide open.

Like a lion I will eat you up.

Like a wild animal I will tear you apart.

Hosea 13:5–8 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

I cared for you in the wilderness,

In the land of drought.

As they had their pasture, they became satisfied,

And being satisfied, their heart became proud;

Therefore they forgot Me.

So I will be like a lion to them;

Like a leopard I will lie in wait by the wayside.

I will encounter them like a bear robbed of her cubs,

And I will tear open their chests;

There I will also devour them like a lioness,

As a wild beast would tear them.
