Habakkuk 2:15–17

15 “Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbor,

7Pressing him to your lbottle,

Even to make him drunk,

That you may look on 8his nakedness!

16 You are filled with shame instead of glory.

You also—drink!

And 9be exposed as uncircumcised!

The cup of the Lord’s right hand will be turned against you,

And utter shame will be on your glory.

17 For the violence done to Lebanon will cover you,

And the plunder of beasts which made them afraid,

Because of men’s blood

And the violence of the land and the city,

And of all who dwell in it.

Habakkuk 2:15–17 — The New International Version (NIV)

15 “Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors,

pouring it from the wineskin till they are drunk,

so that he can gaze on their naked bodies!

16 You will be filled with shame instead of glory.

Now it is your turn! Drink and let your nakedness be exposed!

The cup from the Lord’s right hand is coming around to you,

and disgrace will cover your glory.

17 The violence you have done to Lebanon will overwhelm you,

and your destruction of animals will terrify you.

For you have shed human blood;

you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.

Habakkuk 2:15–17 — English Standard Version (ESV)

15 “Woe to him who makes his neighbors drink—

you pour out your wrath and make them drunk,

in order to gaze at their nakedness!

16 You will have your fill of shame instead of glory.

Drink, yourself, and show your uncircumcision!

The cup in the Lord’s right hand

will come around to you,

and utter shame will come upon your glory!

17 The violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you,

as will the destruction of the beasts that terrified them,

for the blood of man and violence to the earth,

to cities and all who dwell in them.

Habakkuk 2:15–17 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

15 Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink,

That puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also,

That thou mayest look on their nakedness!

16 Thou art filled with shame for glory:

Drink thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered:

The cup of the Lord’s right hand shall be turned unto thee,

And shameful spewing shall be on thy glory.

17 For the violence of Lebanon shall cover thee,

And the spoil of beasts, which made them afraid,

Because of men’s blood, and for the violence of the land,

Of the city, and of all that dwell therein.

Habakkuk 2:15–17 — New Living Translation (NLT)

15 “What sorrow awaits you who make your neighbors drunk!

You force your cup on them

so you can gloat over their shameful nakedness.

16 But soon it will be your turn to be disgraced.

Come, drink and be exposed!

Drink from the cup of the Lord’s judgment,

and all your glory will be turned to shame.

17 You cut down the forests of Lebanon.

Now you will be cut down.

You destroyed the wild animals,

so now their terror will be yours.

You committed murder throughout the countryside

and filled the towns with violence.

Habakkuk 2:15–17 — New Century Version (NCV)

15 “How terrible for the nation that makes its neighbors drink,

pouring from the jug of wine until they are drunk

so that it can look at their naked bodies.

16 You Babylonians will be filled with disgrace, not respect.

It’s your turn to drink and fall to the ground like a drunk person.

The cup of anger from the Lord’s right hand is coming around to you.

You will receive disgrace, not respect.

17 You hurt many people in Lebanon,

but now you will be hurt.

You killed many animals there,

and now you must be afraid

because of what you did

to that land, those cities, and the people who lived in them.

Habakkuk 2:15–17 — American Standard Version (ASV)

15 Woe unto him that giveth his neighbor drink, to thee that addest thy venom, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness! 16 Thou art filled with shame, and not glory: drink thou also, and be as one uncircumcised; the cup of Jehovah’s right hand shall come round unto thee, and foul shame shall be upon thy glory. 17 For the violence done to Lebanon shall cover thee, and the destruction of the beasts, which made them afraid; because of men’s blood, and for the violence done to the land, to the city and to all that dwell therein.

Habakkuk 2:15–17 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

15 Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, —that pourest out thy flask, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness! 16 Thou art filled with shame instead of glory; drink thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered: the cup of Jehovah’s right hand shall be turned unto thee, and a shameful spewing shall be on thy glory. 17 For the violence done to Lebanon shall cover thee, and the destruction of beasts which made them afraid; because of men’s blood, and for the violence done to the land, to the city, and all that dwell therein.

Habakkuk 2:15–17 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

15 “ ‘How horrible it will be for the one who makes his neighbor drink

from the bowl of God’s rage,

making him drunk in order to stare at his nakedness.’

16 You are filled with disgrace rather than glory.

Drink! Yes you! And expose yourself as godless.

The cup in the Lord’s right hand will come around to you,

and disgrace will cover your glory.

17 The violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you,

and the destruction done to the animals will terrify you

because of the slaughter and violence done

to lands, cities, and all their inhabitants.

Habakkuk 2:15–17 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

15 Woe to him who gives his neighbors drink,

pouring out your wrath

and even making them drunk,

in order to look at their nakedness!

16 You will be filled with disgrace instead of glory.

You also—drink,

and expose your uncircumcision!

The cup in the Lord’s right hand

will come around to you,

and utter disgrace will cover your glory.

17 For your violence against Lebanon

will overwhelm you;

the destruction of animals will terrify you

because of your human bloodshed and violence

against lands, cities, and all who live in them.

Habakkuk 2:15–17 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

15 “Alas for you who make your neighbors drink,

pouring out your wrath until they are drunk,

in order to gaze on their nakedness!”

16 You will be sated with contempt instead of glory.

Drink, you yourself, and stagger!

The cup in the Lord’s right hand

will come around to you,

and shame will come upon your glory!

17 For the violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you;

the destruction of the animals will terrify you—

because of human bloodshed and violence to the earth,

to cities and all who live in them.

Habakkuk 2:15–17 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

15 Woe to him who gives a drink to his neighbors,

pouring out your wrath and also making them drunk

in order to see their nakedness!

16 You will be sated with shame rather than glory.

Drink also yourself, and expose yourself!

The cup of the right hand of Yahweh

will come around upon you

and disgrace upon your glory.

17 For the violence of Lebanon will cover you,

and the destruction of wild animals will shatter them

on account of the blood of humanity,

and the violence against the land,

against a city and all the inhabitants in it.

Habakkuk 2:15–17 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

15 “How terrible it will be for the Babylonians!

They give drinks to their neighbors.

They pour the drinks from wineskins

until their neighbors are drunk.

They want to look at their naked bodies.

16 But the Babylonians will be filled

with shame instead of glory.

So now it is their turn to drink

and be stripped of their clothes.

The cup of anger in my powerful right hand

is going to punish them.

They will be covered with shame instead of glory.

17 The harm they have done to Lebanon

will bring them down.

Because they have killed so many animals,

animals will terrify them.

They have spilled man’s blood.

They have destroyed lands and cities

and everyone in them.

Habakkuk 2:15–17 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

15 Woe to you who make your neighbors drink,

Who mix in your venom even to make them drunk

So as to look on their nakedness!

16 “You will be filled with disgrace rather than honor.

Now you yourself drink and expose your own nakedness.

The cup in the Lord’s right hand will come around to you,

And utter disgrace will come upon your glory.

17 “For the violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you,

And the devastation of its beasts by which you terrified them,

Because of human bloodshed and violence done to the land,

To the town and all its inhabitants.
