they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the Lord,

They shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.
13 In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst.
14 They that swear by the sin of Samaria,

And, The manner of Beer-sheba liveth;
Even they shall fall, and never rise up again.
Amos 8:11–14 — New Living Translation (NLT)
11 “The time is surely coming,” says the Sovereign Lord,
“when I will send a famine on the land—
not a famine of bread or water
but of hearing the words of the Lord.
12 People will stagger from sea to sea
and wander from border to border
searching for the word of the Lord,
but they will not find it.
13 Beautiful girls and strong young men
will grow faint in that day,
thirsting for the Lord’s word.
14 And those who swear by the shameful idols of Samaria—
who take oaths in the name of the god of Dan
and make vows in the name of the god of Beersheba—
they will all fall down,
never to rise again.”
Amos 8:11–14 — New Century Version (NCV)
11 The Lord God says: “The days are coming
when I will cause a time of hunger in the land.
The people will not be hungry for bread or thirsty for water,
but they will be hungry for words from the Lord.
12 They will wander from the Mediterranean Sea to the Dead Sea,
from the north to the east.
They will search for the word of the Lord,
but they won’t find it.
13 At that time the beautiful young women and the young men
will become weak from thirst.
14 They make promises by the idol in Samaria
and say, ‘As surely as the god of Dan lives …’
and, ‘As surely as the god of Beersheba lives, we promise …’
So they will fall
and never get up again.”
Amos 8:11–14 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Amos 8:11–14 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)
11 The days are going to come, declares the Almighty Lord,
when I will send a famine throughout the land.
It won’t be an ordinary famine or drought.
Instead, there will be a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.
12 People will wander from sea to sea
and roam from the north to the east,
searching for the Lord’s word.
But they won’t find it.
13 On that day beautiful young women and strong young men
will faint because of their thirst.
14 ⸤How horrible it will be for⸥ those who swear by Ashimah,
the idol of Samaria, and say,
“I solemnly swear, Dan, as your god lives.…”
“I solemnly swear as long as there is a road to Beersheba.…”
Those who say this will fall and never get up again.

not a famine of bread or a thirst for water,
but of hearing the words of the Lord.
12 People will stagger from sea to sea
and roam from north to east,
seeking the word of the Lord,
but they will not find it.
13 In that day the beautiful young women,
the young men also, will faint from thirst.
14 Those who swear by the guilt of Samaria
and say, “As your god lives, Dan,”
or “As the way of Beer-sheba lives” —
they will fall, never to rise again.

they shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord,

13 In that day the beautiful young women and the young men

11 Look, the days are coming,” declares my Lord Yahweh, “when I will send a famine in the land, not a famine for bread and not a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Yahweh! 12 And they will wander from sea to sea and from the north and to the east. They will roam about to seek the word of Yahweh, but they will not find it! 13 In that day the beautiful young women and the young men will faint because of thirst. 14 These are those who swear by the guilt of Samaria and say, ‘By the life of your gods, O Dan,’ and ‘By the life of the way of Beersheba,’ they will fall and they will not rise again.”
Amos 8:11–14 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)
11 The Lord and King announces,
“The days are coming
when I will send hunger through the land.
But people will not be hungry for food.
They will not be thirsty for water.
Instead, they will be hungry
to hear a message from me.
12 People will wander from the Dead Sea to the Mediterranean.
They will travel from north to east.
They will look for a message from me.
But they will not find it.
13 “At that time
“the lovely young women and strong young men
will faint because they are so thirsty.
14 Some people take oaths in the name
of Samaria’s shameful god.
Others say, ‘People of Dan, you can be sure
that your god is alive.’
Still others say, ‘You can be sure
that Beersheba’s god is alive.’
But all of those people will fall dead.
They will never get up again.”
