11 Therefore thus says the Lord God:

“An adversary shall be all around the land;

He shall sap your strength from you,

And your palaces shall be plundered.”

12 Thus says the Lord:

“As a shepherd 7takes from the mouth of a lion

Two legs or a piece of an ear,

So shall the children of Israel be taken out

Who dwell in Samaria—

In the corner of a bed and 8on the edge of a couch!

13 Hear and testify against the house of Jacob,”

Says the Lord God, the God of hosts,

14 “That in the day I punish Israel for their transgressions,

I will also visit destruction on the altars of gBethel;

And the horns of the altar shall be cut off

And fall to the ground.

Amos 3:11–15 — The New International Version (NIV)

11 Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“An enemy will overrun your land,

pull down your strongholds

and plunder your fortresses.”

12 This is what the Lord says:

“As a shepherd rescues from the lion’s mouth

only two leg bones or a piece of an ear,

so will the Israelites living in Samaria be rescued,

with only the head of a bed

and a piece of fabric from a couch.”

13 “Hear this and testify against the descendants of Jacob,” declares the Lord, the Lord God Almighty.

14 “On the day I punish Israel for her sins,

I will destroy the altars of Bethel;

the horns of the altar will be cut off

and fall to the ground.

15 I will tear down the winter house

along with the summer house;

the houses adorned with ivory will be destroyed

and the mansions will be demolished,”

declares the Lord.

Amos 3:11–15 — English Standard Version (ESV)

11 Therefore thus says the Lord God:

“An adversary shall surround the land

and bring down your defenses from you,

and your strongholds shall be plundered.”

12 Thus says the Lord: “As the shepherd rescues from the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, so shall the people of Israel who dwell in Samaria be rescued, with the corner of a couch and part of a bed.

13 “Hear, and testify against the house of Jacob,”

declares the Lord God, the God of hosts,

14 “that on the day I punish Israel for his transgressions,

I will punish the altars of Bethel,

and the horns of the altar shall be cut off

and fall to the ground.

15 I will strike the winter house along with the summer house,

and the houses of ivory shall perish,

and the great houses shall come to an end,”

declares the Lord.

Amos 3:11–15 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

11 Therefore thus saith the Lord God;

An adversary there shall be even round about the land;

And he shall bring down thy strength from thee,

And thy palaces shall be spoiled.

12 Thus saith the Lord;

As the shepherd taketh out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear;

So shall the children of Israel be taken out

That dwell in Samaria in the corner of a bed, and in Damascus in a couch.

13 Hear ye, and testify in the house of Jacob,

Saith the Lord God, the God of hosts,

14 That in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him

I will also visit the altars of Beth-el:

And the horns of the altar shall be cut off,

And fall to the ground.

15 And I will smite the winter house with the summer house;

And the houses of ivory shall perish,

And the great houses shall have an end, saith the Lord.

Amos 3:11–15 — New Living Translation (NLT)

11 Therefore,” says the Sovereign Lord,

“an enemy is coming!

He will surround them and shatter their defenses.

Then he will plunder all their fortresses.”

12 This is what the Lord says:

“A shepherd who tries to rescue a sheep from a lion’s mouth

will recover only two legs or a piece of an ear.

So it will be for the Israelites in Samaria lying on luxurious beds,

and for the people of Damascus reclining on couches.

13 “Now listen to this, and announce it throughout all Israel,” says the Lord, the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies.

14 “On the very day I punish Israel for its sins,

I will destroy the pagan altars at Bethel.

The horns of the altar will be cut off

and fall to the ground.

15 And I will destroy the beautiful homes of the wealthy—

their winter mansions and their summer houses, too—

all their palaces filled with ivory,”

says the Lord.

Amos 3:11–15 — New Century Version (NCV)

11 So this is what the Lord God says:

“An enemy will take over the land

and pull down your strongholds;

he will take the treasures out of your strong buildings.”

12 This is what the Lord says:

“A shepherd might save from a lion’s mouth

only two leg bones or a scrap of an ear of his sheep.

In the same way only a few Israelites in Samaria will be saved—

people who now sit on their beds

and on their couches.”

13 “Listen and be witnesses against the family of Jacob,” says the Lord God, the God All-Powerful.

14 “When I punish Israel for their sins,

I will also destroy the altars at Bethel.

The corners of the altar will be cut off,

and they will fall to the ground.

15 I will tear down the winter house,

together with the summer house.

The houses decorated with ivory will be destroyed,

and the great houses will come to an end,” says the Lord.

Amos 3:11–15 — American Standard Version (ASV)

11 Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: An adversary there shall be, even round about the land; and he shall bring down thy strength from thee, and thy palaces shall be plundered. 12 Thus saith Jehovah: As the shepherd rescueth out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, so shall the children of Israel be rescued that sit in Samaria in the corner of a couch, and on the silken cushions of a bed.

13 Hear ye, and testify against the house of Jacob, saith the Lord Jehovah, the God of hosts. 14 For in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him, I will also visit the altars of Beth-el; and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground. 15 And I will smite the winter-house with the summer-house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall have an end, saith Jehovah.

Amos 3:11–15 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

11 Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: An adversary! —even round about the land! And he shall bring down thy strength from thee, and thy palaces shall be pillaged. 12 Thus saith Jehovah: Like as the shepherd rescueth out of the jaw of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear; so shall the children of Israel be rescued that sit in Samaria in the corner of a couch, and upon the damask of a bed. 13 Hear ye, and testify in the house of Jacob, saith the Lord Jehovah, the God of hosts, 14 that in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him, I will also punish the altars of Bethel; and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground. 15 And I will smite the winter-house with the summer-house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and many houses shall have an end, saith Jehovah.

Amos 3:11–15 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

11 This is what the Almighty Lord says:

An enemy will surround your land,

strip you of your defenses,

and loot your palaces.

12 This is what the Lord says:

As a shepherd rescues two legs or a piece of an ear out of a lion’s mouth,

so the Israelites living in Samaria will be rescued,

⸤having only⸥ a corner of a bed or a piece of a couch.

13 Listen, and testify against the descendants of Jacob,

declares the Almighty Lord, the God of Armies.

14 On the day I punish Israel for its disobedience,

I will also destroy the altars at Bethel.

The horns of the altar will be cut off and will fall to the ground.

15 I will tear down winter houses as well as summer houses.

Houses ⸤decorated⸥ with ivory will be destroyed.

Mansions will be demolished, declares the Lord

Amos 3:11–15 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

11 Therefore, the Lord God says:

An enemy will surround the land;

he will destroy your strongholds

and plunder your citadels.

12 The Lord says:

As the shepherd snatches two legs

or a piece of an ear

from the lion’s mouth,

so the Israelites who live in Samaria

will be rescued

with only the corner of a bed

or the cushion of a couch.

13 Listen and testify against the house of Jacob—

this is the declaration of the Lord God,

the God of Hosts.

14 I will punish the altars of Bethel

on the day I punish Israel for its crimes;

the horns of the altar will be cut off

and fall to the ground.

15 I will demolish the winter house

and the summer house;

the houses inlaid with ivory will be destroyed,

and the great houses will come to an end.

This is the Lord’s declaration.

Amos 3:11–15 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

11 Therefore thus says the Lord God:

An adversary shall surround the land,

and strip you of your defense;

and your strongholds shall be plundered.

12 Thus says the Lord: As the shepherd rescues from the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, so shall the people of Israel who live in Samaria be rescued, with the corner of a couch and part of a bed.

13 Hear, and testify against the house of Jacob,

says the Lord God, the God of hosts:

14 On the day I punish Israel for its transgressions,

I will punish the altars of Bethel,

and the horns of the altar shall be cut off

and fall to the ground.

15 I will tear down the winter house as well as the summer house;

and the houses of ivory shall perish,

and the great houses shall come to an end,

says the Lord.

Amos 3:11–15 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

11 Therefore, thus says my Lord Yahweh, “A foe shall surround the land and bring down your strongholds, and your citadel fortresses shall be plundered.” 12 Thus says Yahweh, “Just as the shepherd rescues two legs or a piece of an ear from the mouth of the lion, so shall the people of Israel who dwell in Samaria, with the corner of a couch and the damask of a bed.” 13 “Listen and testify against the house of Jacob,” declares my Lord Yahweh, the God of hosts. 14 “For on the day I punish Israel for its transgression, I will also punish the altars of Bethel and the horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground. 15 I will ruin the winter house as well as the summer house, and the houses of ivory will perish and the great houses shall come to an end,” declares Yahweh.

Amos 3:11–15 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

11 So the Lord and King says,

“Enemies will take over your land.

They will pull down your places of safety.

They will rob your forts.”

12 The Lord says,

“Suppose a shepherd saves only two leg bones

from a lion’s mouth.

Or he might save only a piece of an ear.

That is how the Israelites will be saved.

They sit in Samaria

on the edge of their beds.

They lie down in Damascus

on their couches.”

13 “Listen to me,” announces the Lord. “Witness against the people of Jacob,” says the Lord God who rules over all.

14 “I will punish Israel for their sins.

When I do, I will destroy their altars at Bethel.

The horns that stick out from the upper corners

of their main altar will be cut off.

They will fall to the ground.

15 I will tear their winter houses down.

I will also pull down their summer houses.

The houses they have decorated with ivory will be destroyed.

And their princely houses will be torn down,”

announces the Lord.

Amos 3:11–15 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

11 Therefore, thus says the Lord God,

“An enemy, even one surrounding the land,

Will pull down your strength from you

And your citadels will be looted.”

12 Thus says the Lord,

Just as the shepherd snatches from the lion’s mouth a couple of legs or a piece of an ear,

So will the sons of Israel dwelling in Samaria be snatched away

With the corner of a bed and the cover of a couch!

13 Hear and testify against the house of Jacob,”

Declares the Lord God, the God of hosts.

14 “For on the day that I punish Israel’s transgressions,

I will also punish the altars of Bethel;

The horns of the altar will be cut off

And they will fall to the ground.

15 “I will also smite the winter house together with the summer house;

The houses of ivory will also perish

And the great houses will come to an end,”

Declares the Lord.
