1 Samuel 2:3–8 — The New International Version (NIV)

“Do not keep talking so proudly

or let your mouth speak such arrogance,

for the Lord is a God who knows,

and by him deeds are weighed.

“The bows of the warriors are broken,

but those who stumbled are armed with strength.

Those who were full hire themselves out for food,

but those who were hungry are hungry no more.

She who was barren has borne seven children,

but she who has had many sons pines away.

“The Lord brings death and makes alive;

he brings down to the grave and raises up.

The Lord sends poverty and wealth;

he humbles and he exalts.

He raises the poor from the dust

and lifts the needy from the ash heap;

he seats them with princes

and has them inherit a throne of honor.

“For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s;

on them he has set the world.

1 Samuel 2:3–8 — English Standard Version (ESV)

Talk no more so very proudly,

let not arrogance come from your mouth;

for the Lord is a God of knowledge,

and by him actions are weighed.

The bows of the mighty are broken,

but the feeble bind on strength.

Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread,

but those who were hungry have ceased to hunger.

The barren has borne seven,

but she who has many children is forlorn.

The Lord kills and brings to life;

he brings down to Sheol and raises up.

The Lord makes poor and makes rich;

he brings low and he exalts.

He raises up the poor from the dust;

he lifts the needy from the ash heap

to make them sit with princes

and inherit a seat of honor.

For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,

and on them he has set the world.

1 Samuel 2:3–8 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

Talk no more so exceeding proudly;

Let not arrogancy come out of your mouth:

For the Lord is a God of knowledge,

And by him actions are weighed.

The bows of the mighty men are broken,

And they that stumbled are girded with strength.

They that were full have hired out themselves for bread;

And they that were hungry ceased:

So that the barren hath born seven;

And she that hath many children is waxed feeble.

The Lord killeth, and maketh alive:

He bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.

The Lord maketh poor, and maketh rich:

He bringeth low, and lifteth up.

He raiseth up the poor out of the dust,

And lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill,

To set them among princes,

And to make them inherit the throne of glory:

For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,

And he hath set the world upon them.

1 Samuel 2:3–8 — New Living Translation (NLT)

“Stop acting so proud and haughty!

Don’t speak with such arrogance!

For the Lord is a God who knows what you have done;

he will judge your actions.

The bow of the mighty is now broken,

and those who stumbled are now strong.

Those who were well fed are now starving,

and those who were starving are now full.

The childless woman now has seven children,

and the woman with many children wastes away.

The Lord gives both death and life;

he brings some down to the grave but raises others up.

The Lord makes some poor and others rich;

he brings some down and lifts others up.

He lifts the poor from the dust

and the needy from the garbage dump.

He sets them among princes,

placing them in seats of honor.

For all the earth is the Lord’s,

and he has set the world in order.

1 Samuel 2:3–8 — New Century Version (NCV)

“Don’t continue bragging,

don’t speak proud words.

The Lord is a God who knows everything,

and he judges what people do.

“The bows of warriors break,

but weak people become strong.

Those who once had plenty of food now must work for food,

but people who were hungry are hungry no more.

The woman who could not have children now has seven,

but the woman who had many children now is sad.

“The Lord sends death,

and he brings to life.

He sends people to the grave,

and he raises them to life again.

The Lord makes some people poor,

and others he makes rich.

He makes some people humble,

and others he makes great.

The Lord raises the poor up from the dust,

and he lifts the needy from the ashes.

He lets the poor sit with princes

and receive a throne of honor.

“The foundations of the earth belong to the Lord,

and the Lord set the world upon them.

1 Samuel 2:3–8 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Talk no more so exceeding proudly;

Let not arrogancy come out of your mouth;

For Jehovah is a God of knowledge,

And by him actions are weighed.

The bows of the mighty men are broken;

And they that stumbled are girded with strength.

They that were full have hired out themselves for bread;

And they that were hungry have ceased to hunger:

Yea, the barren hath borne seven;

And she that hath many children languisheth.

Jehovah killeth, and maketh alive:

He bringeth down to Sheol, and bringeth up.

Jehovah maketh poor, and maketh rich:

He bringeth low, he also lifteth up.

He raiseth up the poor out of the dust,

He lifteth up the needy from the dunghill,

To make them sit with princes,

And inherit the throne of glory:

For the pillars of the earth are Jehovah’s,

And he hath set the world upon them.

1 Samuel 2:3–8 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Do not multiply your words of pride, let not vain-glory come out of your mouth; For Jehovah is a •God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. The bow of the mighty is broken, and they that stumbled are girded with strength. They that were full have hired themselves out for bread; and the hungry are so no more: Even the barren beareth seven, and she that hath many children is waxed feeble. Jehovah killeth, and maketh alive; he bringeth down to Sheol, and bringeth up. Jehovah maketh poor, and maketh rich, he bringeth low, also he lifteth up: He raiseth up the poor out of the dust; from the dung-hill he lifteth up the needy, To set him among nobles; and he maketh them inherit a throne of glory; For the pillars of the earth are Jehovah’s, and he hath set the world upon them.

1 Samuel 2:3–8 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

“Do not boast

⸤or⸥ let arrogance come out of your mouth

because the Lord is a God of knowledge,

and he weighs ⸤our⸥ actions.

“The bows of the warriors are broken,

but those who stumble are armed with strength.

Those who were well-fed hire themselves out for a piece of bread,

but those who were hungry hunger no more.

Even the woman who was childless gives birth to seven children,

but the mother of many children grieves all alone.

“The Lord kills, and he gives life.

He makes ⸤people⸥ go down to the grave, and he raises them up ⸤again⸥.

The Lord causes poverty and grants wealth.

He humbles ⸤people⸥; he also promotes them.

He raises the poor from the dust.

He lifts the needy from the trash heap

in order to make them sit with nobles

and even to make them inherit a glorious throne.

“The pillars of the earth are the Lord’s.

He has set the world on them.

1 Samuel 2:3–8 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Do not boast so proudly,

or let arrogant words come out of your mouth,

for the Lord is a God of knowledge,

and actions are weighed by Him.

The bows of the warriors are broken,

but the feeble are clothed with strength.

Those who are full hire themselves out for food,

but those who are starving hunger no more.

The woman who is childless gives birth to seven,

but the woman with many sons pines away.

The Lord brings death and gives life;

He sends some to Sheol, and He raises others up.

The Lord brings poverty and gives wealth;

He humbles and He exalts.

He raises the poor from the dust

and lifts the needy from the garbage pile.

He seats them with noblemen

and gives them a throne of honor.

For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s;

He has set the world on them.

1 Samuel 2:3–8 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Talk no more so very proudly,

let not arrogance come from your mouth;

for the Lord is a God of knowledge,

and by him actions are weighed.

The bows of the mighty are broken,

but the feeble gird on strength.

Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread,

but those who were hungry are fat with spoil.

The barren has borne seven,

but she who has many children is forlorn.

The Lord kills and brings to life;

he brings down to Sheol and raises up.

The Lord makes poor and makes rich;

he brings low, he also exalts.

He raises up the poor from the dust;

he lifts the needy from the ash heap,

to make them sit with princes

and inherit a seat of honor.

For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,

and on them he has set the world.

1 Samuel 2:3–8 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Do not increase speaking very proud words!

Let no arrogance go forth from your mouth,

for Yahweh is a God of knowledge

whose deeds are not weighed.

The bows of mighty warriors are shattered,

but those who stumble gird themselves with strength.

Those who were full must hire themselves out for bread,

but those who are hungry will become fat.

As for the infertile, she will bear seven,

but she who has many sons withers away.

Yahweh kills and restores alive,

he brings down to Sheol and raises up.

Yahweh makes poor and makes rich;

he brings low and also exalts.

He raises up the poor from the dust.

From the ash heap he lifts up the needy,

to cause them to sit with noble people

and to cause them to inherit a seat of honor.

For the pillars of the earth belong to Yahweh

and he has set the inhabited world on them.

1 Samuel 2:3–8 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

“Don’t keep talking so proudly.

Don’t let your mouth say such proud things.

The Lord is a God who knows everything.

He judges everything people do.

“The bows of great heroes are broken.

But those who trip and fall are made strong.

Those who used to be full have to work for food.

But those who used to be hungry aren’t hungry anymore.

The woman who couldn’t have children has seven of them now.

But the woman who has had many children is sad now because hers have died.

“The Lord causes people to die. He also gives people life.

He brings people down to the grave. He also brings people up.

The Lord makes people poor. He also makes people rich.

He brings people down. He also lifts people up.

He raises poor people up from the trash pile.

He lifts needy people out of the ashes.

He lets them sit with princes.

He gives them places of honor.

“The foundations of the earth belong to the Lord.

On them he has set the world.
