Isaiah 23:9–12

9 The Lord of hosts has purposed it,

to defile the pompous pride of all glory,

to dishonor all the honored of the earth.

10 Cross over your land like the Nile,

O daughter of Tarshish;

there is no restraint anymore.

11 He has stretched out his hand over the sea;

he has shaken the kingdoms;

the Lord has given command concerning Canaan

to destroy its strongholds.

12 And he said:

“You will no more exult,

O oppressed virgin daughter of Sidon;

arise, cross over to Cyprus,

even there you will have no rest.”

9 The Lord of hosts hath purposed it,

To stain the pride of all glory,

And to bring into contempt all the honourable of the earth.

10 Pass through thy land as a river, O daughter of Tarshish:

There is no more strength.

11 He stretched out his hand over the sea, he shook the kingdoms:

The Lord hath given a commandment against the merchant city, to destroy the strong holds thereof.

12 And he said, Thou shalt no more rejoice,

O thou oppressed virgin, daughter of Zidon:

Arise, pass over to Chittim;

There also shalt thou have no rest.

9 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies has done it

to destroy your pride

and bring low all earth’s nobility.

10 Come, people of Tarshish,

sweep over the land like the flooding Nile,

for Tyre is defenseless.

11 The Lord held out his hand over the sea

and shook the kingdoms of the earth.

He has spoken out against Phoenicia,

ordering that her fortresses be destroyed.

12 He says, “Never again will you rejoice,

O daughter of Sidon, for you have been crushed.

Even if you flee to Cyprus,

you will find no rest.”

9 The Lord of hosts has purposed it,

To bring to dishonor the pride of all glory,

To bring into contempt all the honorable of the earth.

10 Overflow through your land like the River,

O daughter of Tarshish;

There is no more strength.

11 He stretched out His hand over the sea,

He shook the kingdoms;

The Lord has given a commandment against Canaan

To destroy its strongholds.

12 And He said, “You will rejoice no more,

O you oppressed virgin daughter of Sidon.

Arise, cross over to Cyprus;

There also you will have no rest.”

9 It was the Lord All-Powerful who planned this.

He decided to make these proud people unimportant;

he decided to disgrace those who were greatly respected.

10 Go through your land, people of Tarshish,

like the Nile goes through Egypt.

There is no harbor for you now!

11 The Lord has stretched his hand over the sea

and made its kingdoms tremble.

He commands that Canaan’s

strong, walled cities be destroyed.

12 He said, “Sidon, you will not rejoice any longer,

because you are destroyed.

Even if you cross the sea to Cyprus,

you will not find a place to rest.”

9 Jehovah of hosts hath purposed it, to stain the pride of all glory, to bring into contempt all the honorable of the earth. 10 Pass through thy land as the Nile, O daughter of Tarshish; there is no restraint any more. 11 He hath stretched out his hand over the sea, he hath shaken the kingdoms: Jehovah hath given commandment concerning Canaan, to destroy the strongholds thereof. 12 And he said, Thou shalt no more rejoice, O thou oppressed virgin daughter of Sidon: arise, pass over to Kittim; even there shalt thou have no rest.

9 Jehovah of hosts hath purposed it, to profane the pride of all glory, to bring to nought all the honourable of the earth. 10 Overflow thy land like the Nile, daughter of Tarshish: there is no more restraint. 11 He hath stretched out his hand over the sea, he shaketh the kingdoms. Jehovah hath given a commandment concerning Canaan, to destroy the strongholds thereof, 12 and hath said, Thou shalt no more exult, thou oppressed virgin, daughter of Sidon: get thee up, pass over to Chittim; even there shalt thou have no rest.

9 The Lord of Armies planned this 

in order to dishonor all arrogant people 

and to humiliate all the honored people of the world. 

10 Travel through your country like the Nile, people of Tarshish. 

You no longer have a harbor. 

11 The Lord has stretched his hand over the sea to shake kingdoms. 

He has commanded that Canaan’s fortifications be destroyed. 

12 He says, “You will no longer be joyful, 

my dear abused people Sidon.” 

Get up, and travel to Cyprus. 

Even there you will find no rest. 

9 The Lord of Hosts planned it,

to desecrate all its glorious beauty,

to disgrace all the honored ones of the earth.

10 Overflow your land like the Nile, daughter of Tarshish;

there is no longer anything to restrain you.

11 He stretched out His hand over the sea;

He made kingdoms tremble.

The Lord has commanded

that the Canaanite fortresses be destroyed.

12 He said,

“You will not rejoice anymore,

ravished young woman, daughter of Sidon.

Get up and cross over to Cyprus —

even there you will have no rest!”

9 The Lord of hosts has planned it—

to defile the pride of all glory,

to shame all the honored of the earth.

10 Cross over to your own land,

O ships of Tarshish;

this is a harbor no more.

11 He has stretched out his hand over the sea;

he has shaken the kingdoms;

the Lord has given command concerning Canaan,

to destroy its fortresses.

12 He said:

“You will exult no longer,

O oppressed virgin daughter Sidon;

rise, cross over to Cyprus—

even there you will have no rest.”

9 Yahweh of hosts has planned it:

to defile the pride of all glory,

to humble all the honored ones of the earth.

10 Cross over your own land like the Nile, daughter of Tarshish;

there is no longer a harbor.

11 He has stretched his hand out over the sea;

he has made kingdoms shake.

Yahweh has commanded concerning Canaan

to destroy her fortresses.

12 And he said,

“You will not continue to exult, crushed one, virgin daughter of Sidon.

Arise, cross over to Cyprus! There will be no rest for you even there.”

9 The Lord who rules over all planned to do it.

He wanted to bring down all of its pride and glory.

He wanted to put to shame those who were honored all over the earth.

10 People of Tarshish, spread out over your land

like the waters of the Nile.

There isn’t anything to hold you back anymore.

11 The Lord has reached his powerful hand out over the sea.

He has made its kingdoms tremble with fear.

He has given a command concerning Phoenicia.

He has ordered that its forts be destroyed.

12 He said, “No more wild parties for you!

People of Sidon, you are now destroyed!

“Leave your city. Go across the sea to Cyprus.

Even there you will not find any rest.”

9 The Lord of hosts has planned it, to defile the pride of all beauty,

To despise all the honored of the earth.

10 Overflow your land like the Nile, O daughter of Tarshish,

There is no more restraint.

11 He has stretched His hand out over the sea,

He has made the kingdoms tremble;

The Lord has given a command concerning Canaan to demolish its strongholds.

12 He has said, “You shall exult no more, O crushed virgin daughter of Sidon.

Arise, pass over to Cyprus; even there you will find no rest.”
