Micah 3:1–5

Rulers Denounced

1 And I said,

aHear now, heads of Jacob

And rulers of the house of Israel.

Is it not for you to bknow justice?

2 “You who hate good and love evil,

Who atear off their skin from them

And their flesh from their bones,

3 Who aeat the flesh of my people,

Strip off their skin from them,

Break their bones

And bchop them up as for the pot

And as meat in a kettle.”

4 Then they will acry out to the Lord,

But He will not answer them.

Instead, He will bhide His face from them at that time

Because they have cpracticed evil deeds.

5 Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets who alead my people astray;

When they have something to bite with their teeth,

They bcry, “Peace,”

But against him who puts nothing in their mouths

They declare holy war.

Micah 3:1–5 — The New International Version (NIV)

Then I said,

“Listen, you leaders of Jacob,

you rulers of Israel.

Should you not embrace justice,

you who hate good and love evil;

who tear the skin from my people

and the flesh from their bones;

who eat my people’s flesh,

strip off their skin

and break their bones in pieces;

who chop them up like meat for the pan,

like flesh for the pot?”

Then they will cry out to the Lord,

but he will not answer them.

At that time he will hide his face from them

because of the evil they have done.

This is what the Lord says:

“As for the prophets

who lead my people astray,

they proclaim ‘peace’

if they have something to eat,

but prepare to wage war against anyone

who refuses to feed them.

Micah 3:1–5 — English Standard Version (ESV)

And I said:

Hear, you heads of Jacob

and rulers of the house of Israel!

Is it not for you to know justice?—

you who hate the good and love the evil,

who tear the skin from off my people

and their flesh from off their bones,

who eat the flesh of my people,

and flay their skin from off them,

and break their bones in pieces

and chop them up like meat in a pot,

like flesh in a cauldron.

Then they will cry to the Lord,

but he will not answer them;

he will hide his face from them at that time,

because they have made their deeds evil.

Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets

who lead my people astray,

who cry “Peace”

when they have something to eat,

but declare war against him

who puts nothing into their mouths.

Micah 3:1–5 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

And I said, Hear, I pray you, O heads of Jacob,

And ye princes of the house of Israel;

Is it not for you to know judgment?

Who hate the good, and love the evil;

Who pluck off their skin from off them,

And their flesh from off their bones;

Who also eat the flesh of my people,

And flay their skin from off them;

And they break their bones,

And chop them in pieces, as for the pot,

And as flesh within the caldron.

Then shall they cry unto the Lord, but he will not hear them:

He will even hide his face from them at that time,

As they have behaved themselves ill in their doings.

Thus saith the Lord concerning the prophets that make my people err,

That bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace;

And he that putteth not into their mouths,

They even prepare war against him.

Micah 3:1–5 — New Living Translation (NLT)

I said, “Listen, you leaders of Israel!

You are supposed to know right from wrong,

but you are the very ones

who hate good and love evil.

You skin my people alive

and tear the flesh from their bones.

Yes, you eat my people’s flesh,

strip off their skin,

and break their bones.

You chop them up

like meat for the cooking pot.

Then you beg the Lord for help in times of trouble!

Do you really expect him to answer?

After all the evil you have done,

he won’t even look at you!”

This is what the Lord says:

“You false prophets are leading my people astray!

You promise peace for those who give you food,

but you declare war on those who refuse to feed you.

Micah 3:1–5 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

And I said:

“Hear now, O heads of Jacob,

And you rulers of the house of Israel:

Is it not for you to know justice?

You who hate good and love evil;

Who strip the skin from My people,

And the flesh from their bones;

Who also eat the flesh of My people,

Flay their skin from them,

Break their bones,

And chop them in pieces

Like meat for the pot,

Like flesh in the caldron.”

Then they will cry to the Lord,

But He will not hear them;

He will even hide His face from them at that time,

Because they have been evil in their deeds.

Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets

Who make my people stray;

Who chant “Peace”

While they chew with their teeth,

But who prepare war against him

Who puts nothing into their mouths:

Micah 3:1–5 — New Century Version (NCV)

Then I said,

“Listen, leaders of the people of Jacob;

listen, you rulers of the nation of Israel.

You should know how to decide cases fairly,

but you hate good and love evil.

You skin my people alive

and tear the flesh off their bones.

You eat my people’s flesh

and skin them and break their bones;

you chop them up like meat for the pot,

like meat in a cooking pan.

They will cry to the Lord,

but he won’t answer them.

At that time he will hide his face from them,

because what they have done is evil.”

The Lord says this about the prophets who teach his people the wrong way of living:

“If these prophets are given food to eat,

they shout, ‘Peace!’

But if someone doesn’t give them what they ask for,

they call for a holy war against that person.

Micah 3:1–5 — American Standard Version (ASV)

And I said, Hear, I pray you, ye heads of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel: is it not for you to know justice? ye who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones; who also eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them, and break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron. Then shall they cry unto Jehovah, but he will not answer them; yea, he will hide his face from them at that time, according as they have wrought evil in their doings.

Thus saith Jehovah concerning the prophets that make my people to err; that bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace; and whoso putteth not into their mouths, they even prepare war against him:

Micah 3:1–5 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

And I said, Hear, I pray you, ye heads of Jacob, and princes of the house of Israel: Is it not for you to know judgment? Ye who hate the good, and love evil; who pluck off their skin from them, and their flesh from off their bones; and who eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them, and break their bones, and chop them in pieces as for the pot, and as flesh within the cauldron. Then shall they cry unto Jehovah, but he will not answer them; and he will hide his face from them at that time, according as they have wrought evil in their doings. Thus saith Jehovah concerning the prophets that cause my people to err, that bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace! but whoso putteth not into their mouths they prepare war against him:

Micah 3:1–5 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

Then I said:

Listen, you leaders of Jacob, you rulers of the nation of Israel.

You should know justice.

You hate good and love evil.

You strip the skin off my people and the flesh off their bones.

You eat my people’s flesh.

You strip off their skin.

You break their bones to pieces.

You chop them up like meat for a pot, like stew meat for a kettle.

Then you will cry to the Lord

but he will not answer you.

He will hide his face from you at that time

because you have done evil things.

This is what the Lord says about the prophets who mislead my people:

When they have something to eat, they say, “All is well!”

But they declare a holy war against those who don’t feed them.

Micah 3:1–5 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Then I said, “Now listen, leaders of Jacob,

you rulers of the house of Israel.

Aren’t you supposed to know what is just?

You hate good and love evil.

You tear off people’s skin

and strip their flesh from their bones.

You eat the flesh of my people

after you strip their skin from them

and break their bones.

You chop them up

like flesh for the cooking pot,

like meat in a cauldron.”

Then they will cry out to the Lord,

but He will not answer them.

He will hide His face from them at that time

because of the crimes they have committed.

This is what the Lord says

concerning the prophets

who lead my people astray,

who proclaim peace

when they have food to sink their teeth into

but declare war against the one

who puts nothing in their mouths.

Micah 3:1–5 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

And I said:

Listen, you heads of Jacob

and rulers of the house of Israel!

Should you not know justice?—

you who hate the good and love the evil,

who tear the skin off my people,

and the flesh off their bones;

who eat the flesh of my people,

flay their skin off them,

break their bones in pieces,

and chop them up like meat in a kettle,

like flesh in a caldron.

Then they will cry to the Lord,

but he will not answer them;

he will hide his face from them at that time,

because they have acted wickedly.

Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets

who lead my people astray,

who cry “Peace”

when they have something to eat,

but declare war against those

who put nothing into their mouths.

Micah 3:1–5 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

And I said,

“Listen, O heads of Jacob

and leaders of the house of Israel!

Is it not for you to know justice?

Those of you who are haters of good

and lovers of evil,

who tear their skin from them

and their flesh from their bones,

and who eat the flesh of my people,

and strip their skin from them,

and break their bones,

and chop them like meat in the pot,

and like flesh in the midst of a cooking pot.”

Then they will cry to Yahweh,

but he will not answer them.

He will hide his face from them at that time,

when they have made their deeds evil.

Thus says Yahweh concerning the prophets

who are leading my people astray,

who are biting with their teeth

and proclaim, “Peace,”

but whoever puts nothing into their mouths

they declare war against.

Micah 3:1–5 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

Then I said,

“Listen, you leaders of Jacob’s people!

Pay attention, you rulers of Israel!

You should know how to judge others fairly.

But you hate what is good.

And you love what is evil.

You are like someone

who tears the skin off my people.

You pull the meat off their bones.

You eat my people’s bodies.

You strip their skin off.

You break their bones in pieces.

You chop them up like meat.

You put them in a cooking pot.”

The time will come when Israel

will cry out to the Lord.

But he won’t answer them.

In fact, he’ll turn his face away from them.

They have done what is evil.

The Lord says,

“You prophets are leading my people

down the wrong path.

If they feed you,

you promise them peace.

If they do not,

you prepare to go to war against them.
