8 The Lord has sent a message against Jacob;

it will fall on Israel.

9 All the people will know it—

Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria—

who say with pride

and arrogance of heart,

10 “The bricks have fallen down,

but we will rebuild with dressed stone;

the fig trees have been felled,

but we will replace them with cedars.”

11 But the Lord has strengthened Rezin’s foes against them

and has spurred their enemies on.

8 The Lord has sent a word against Jacob,

and it will fall on Israel;

9 and all the people will know,

Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,

who say in pride and in arrogance of heart:

10 “The bricks have fallen,

but we will build with dressed stones;

the sycamores have been cut down,

but we will put cedars in their place.”

11 But the Lord raises the adversaries of Rezin against him,

and stirs up his enemies.

8 The Lord sent a word into Jacob,

And it hath lighted upon Israel.

9 And all the people shall know,

Even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria,

That say in the pride and stoutness of heart,

10 The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones:

The sycomores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars.

11 Therefore the Lord shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him,

And join his enemies together;

8 The Lord has spoken out against Jacob;

his judgment has fallen upon Israel.

9 And the people of Israel and Samaria,

who spoke with such pride and arrogance,

will soon know it.

10 They said, “We will replace the broken bricks of our ruins with finished stone,

and replant the felled sycamore-fig trees with cedars.”

11 But the Lord will bring Rezin’s enemies against Israel

and stir up all their foes.

8 The Lord sent a word against Jacob,

And it has fallen on Israel.

9 All the people will know—

Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria—

Who say in pride and arrogance of heart:

10 “The bricks have fallen down,

But we will rebuild with hewn stones;

The sycamores are cut down,

But we will replace them with cedars.”

11 Therefore the Lord shall set up

The adversaries of Rezin against him,

And spur his enemies on,

8 The Lord sent a message against the people of Jacob;

it says that God will judge Israel.

9 Then everyone in Israel, even the leaders in Samaria,

will know that God has sent it.

Those people are proud and brag by saying,

10 “These bricks have fallen,

but we will build again with cut stones.

These small trees have been chopped down,

but we will put great cedars there.”

11 But the Lord has brought the enemies of Rezin against them;

he has stirred up their enemies against them.

8 The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel. 9 And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in pride and in stoutness of heart, 10 The bricks are fallen, but we will build with hewn stone; the sycomores are cut down, but we will put cedars in their place. 11 Therefore Jehovah will set up on high against him the adversaries of Rezin, and will stir up his enemies,

8 The Lord sent a word unto Jacob, and it lighteth upon Israel. 9 And all the people shall know it, Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in pride and stoutness of heart, 10 The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones; the sycamore trees are cut down, but we will replace them with cedars. 11 And Jehovah will set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and arm his enemies,

8 The Lord sent a message against Jacob. 

The message is against Israel. 

9 All the people of Ephraim 

and the people who live in Samaria will know it. 

With arrogant and conceited hearts they will say, 

10 “Bricks have fallen, 

but we will rebuild with hand-cut stones. 

Fig trees have been cut down, 

but we will replace them with cedars.” 

11 The Lord will set Rezin’s oppressors against Israel 

and will stir up its enemies— 

8 The Lord sent a message against Jacob;

it came against Israel.

9 All the people—

Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria —will know it.

They will say with pride and arrogance:

10 “The bricks have fallen,

but we will rebuild with cut stones;

the sycamores have been cut down,

but we will replace them with cedars.”

11 The Lord has raised up Rezin’s adversaries against him

and stirred up his enemies.

8 The Lord sent a word against Jacob,

and it fell on Israel;

9 and all the people knew it—

Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria—

but in pride and arrogance of heart they said:

10 “The bricks have fallen,

but we will build with dressed stones;

the sycamores have been cut down,

but we will put cedars in their place.”

11 So the Lord raised adversaries against them,

and stirred up their enemies,

8 The Lord has sent out a word against Jacob,

and it fell on Israel.

9 And all of the people knew it,

Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria

in pride and arrogance of heart, saying,

10 “The bricks have fallen, but we will build with dressed stone.

The sycamore-fig trees were felled, but we will replace them with cedars.”

11 So Yahweh strengthened the adversaries of Rezin against him,

and he provoked his enemies—

8 The Lord has sent a message against Jacob’s people.

He will punish Israel.

9 All of the people will know about it.

Ephraim’s people and those who live in Samaria will know about it.

Their hearts are very proud.

They say,

10 “The brick buildings have fallen down.

But we will rebuild them with blocks of stone.

The fig trees have been chopped down.

But we’ll plant cedar trees in place of them.”

11 In spite of that, the Lord has made Rezin’s enemies stronger.

He has stirred up Assyria to fight against Israel.
