Isaiah 29:18–21 — New International Version (2011) (NIV)
18 In that day the deaf will hear the words of the scroll,
and out of gloom and darkness
the eyes of the blind will see.
19 Once more the humble will rejoice in the Lord;
the needy will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
20 The ruthless will vanish,
the mockers will disappear,
and all who have an eye for evil will be cut down—
21 those who with a word make someone out to be guilty,
who ensnare the defender in court
and with false testimony deprive the innocent of justice.
Isaiah 29:18–21 — English Standard Version (ESV)
18 In that day the deaf shall hear
the words of a book,
and out of their gloom and darkness
the eyes of the blind shall see.
19 The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the Lord,
and the poor among mankind shall exult in the Holy One of Israel.
20 For the ruthless shall come to nothing
and the scoffer cease,
and all who watch to do evil shall be cut off,
21 who by a word make a man out to be an offender,
and lay a snare for him who reproves in the gate,
and with an empty plea turn aside him who is in the right.
Isaiah 29:18–21 — King James Version (KJV 1900)
18 And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book,
And the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness.
19 The meek also shall increase their joy in the Lord,
And the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
20 For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner is consumed,
And all that watch for iniquity are cut off:
21 That make a man an offender for a word,
And lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate,
And turn aside the just for a thing of nought.
Isaiah 29:18–21 — New Living Translation (NLT)
18 In that day the deaf will hear words read from a book,
and the blind will see through the gloom and darkness.
19 The humble will be filled with fresh joy from the Lord.
The poor will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
20 The scoffer will be gone,
the arrogant will disappear,
and those who plot evil will be killed.
21 Those who convict the innocent
by their false testimony will disappear.
A similar fate awaits those who use trickery to pervert justice
and who tell lies to destroy the innocent.
Isaiah 29:18–21 — The New King James Version (NKJV)
18 In that day the deaf shall hear the words of the book,
And the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity and out of darkness.
19 The humble also shall increase their joy in the Lord,
And the poor among men shall rejoice
In the Holy One of Israel.
20 For the terrible one is brought to nothing,
The scornful one is consumed,
And all who watch for iniquity are cut off—
21 Who make a man an offender by a word,
And lay a snare for him who reproves in the gate,
And turn aside the just by empty words.
Isaiah 29:18–21 — New Century Version (NCV)
18 At that time the deaf will hear the words in a book.
Instead of having darkness and gloom, the blind will see.
19 The Lord will make the poor people happy;
they will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
20 Then the people without mercy will come to an end;
those who do not respect God will disappear.
Those who enjoy doing evil will be gone:
21 those who lie about others in court,
those who trap people in court,
those who lie and take justice from innocent people in court.
Isaiah 29:18–21 — American Standard Version (ASV)
18 And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity and out of darkness. 19 The meek also shall increase their joy in Jehovah, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. 20 For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scoffer ceaseth, and all they that watch for iniquity are cut off; 21 that make a man an offender in his cause, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just with a thing of nought.
Isaiah 29:18–21 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)
18 And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and, out of obscurity and out of darkness, the eyes of the blind shall see; 19 and the meek shall increase their joy in Jehovah, and the needy among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. 20 For the terrible one shall come to nought, and the scorner shall be no more, and all that watch for iniquity shall be cut off, 21 that make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and pervert the judgment of the righteous by futility.
Isaiah 29:18–21 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)
18 When that day comes, the deaf will hear the words written in the book.
The blind will see out of their gloom and darkness.
19 Humble people again will find joy in the Lord.
The poorest of people will find joy in the Holy One of Israel.
20 Tyrants will be gone.
Mockers will be finished.
All who look for ways to do wrong will come to an end:
21 those who make people sin with words,
those who lay traps for judges,
those who, without any reason, deny justice
to people who are in the right.
Isaiah 29:18–21 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
18 On that day the deaf will hear
the words of a document,
and out of a deep darkness
the eyes of the blind will see.
19 The humble will have joy
after joy in the Lord,
and the poor people will rejoice
in the Holy One of Israel.
20 For the ruthless one will vanish,
the scorner will disappear,
and all those who lie in wait with evil intent
will be killed—
21 those who, with their speech,
accuse a person of wrongdoing,
who set a trap at the gate for the mediator,
and without cause deprive the righteous of justice.
Isaiah 29:18–21 — New Revised Standard Version: Updated Edition (NRSVue)
18 On that day the deaf shall hear
the words of a scroll,
and freed from gloom and darkness
the eyes of the blind shall see.
19 The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the Lord,
and the neediest people shall exult in the Holy One of Israel.
20 For the tyrant shall be no more,
and the scoffer shall cease to be;
all those alert to do evil shall be cut off—
21 those who cause a person to lose a lawsuit,
who set a trap for the arbiter in the gate
and undermine justice for the one in the right.
Isaiah 29:18–21 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)
18 And on that day, the deaf shall hear the words of a scroll,
and the eyes of the blind shall see out of gloom and darkness.
19 And the meek have joy after joy in Yahweh,
and the needy of the people shall rejoice in the holy one of Israel.
20 For the tyrant shall be no more,
and the scoffer shall come to an end.
And all those lying in wait for evil shall be cut off;
21 those who mislead a person into sin with a word
and set a trap for the arbitrator in the gate
and guide away the righteous by emptiness.
Isaiah 29:18–21 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)
18 At that time those who can’t hear will hear what is read from the scroll.
Those who are blind will come out of gloom and darkness.
They will be able to see.
19 Those who aren’t proud will once again find their joy in the Lord.
And those who are in need will find their joy in the Holy One of Israel.
20 Those who don’t show any pity will vanish.
Those who make fun of others will disappear.
All those who look for ways to do what is evil will be cut off.
21 Without any proof, they claim that a man is guilty.
In court they try to trap
the one who speaks up for others.
By using dishonest witnesses they keep those who aren’t guilty
from being treated fairly.
