Amos 6:12–14 — The New International Version (NIV)

12 Do horses run on the rocky crags?

Does one plow the sea with oxen?

But you have turned justice into poison

and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness—

13 you who rejoice in the conquest of Lo Debar

and say, “Did we not take Karnaim by our own strength?”

14 For the Lord God Almighty declares,

“I will stir up a nation against you, Israel,

that will oppress you all the way

from Lebo Hamath to the valley of the Arabah.”

Amos 6:12–14 — English Standard Version (ESV)

12 Do horses run on rocks?

Does one plow there with oxen?

But you have turned justice into poison

and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood—

13 you who rejoice in Lo-debar,

who say, “Have we not by our own strength

captured Karnaim for ourselves?”

14 “For behold, I will raise up against you a nation,

O house of Israel,” declares the Lord, the God of hosts;

“and they shall oppress you from Lebo-hamath

to the Brook of the Arabah.”

Amos 6:12–14 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

12 Shall horses run upon the rock?

Will one plow there with oxen?

For ye have turned judgment into gall,

And the fruit of righteousness into hemlock:

13 Ye which rejoice in a thing of nought,

Which say, Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength?

14 But, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, saith the Lord the God of hosts;

And they shall afflict you from the entering in of Hemath unto the river of the wilderness.

Amos 6:12–14 — New Living Translation (NLT)

12 Can horses gallop over boulders?

Can oxen be used to plow them?

But that’s how foolish you are when you turn justice into poison

and the sweet fruit of righteousness into bitterness.

13 And you brag about your conquest of Lo-debar.

You boast, “Didn’t we take Karnaim by our own strength?”

14 “O people of Israel, I am about to bring an enemy nation against you,”

says the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies.

“They will oppress you throughout your land—

from Lebo-hamath in the north

to the Arabah Valley in the south.”

Amos 6:12–14 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

12 Do horses run on rocks?

Does one plow there with oxen?

Yet you have turned justice into gall,

And the fruit of righteousness into wormwood,

13 You who rejoice over Lo Debar,

Who say, “Have we not taken Karnaim for ourselves

By our own strength?”

14 “But, behold, I will raise up a nation against you,

O house of Israel,”

Says the Lord God of hosts;

“And they will afflict you from the entrance of Hamath

To the Valley of the Arabah.”

Amos 6:12–14 — New Century Version (NCV)

12 Horses do not run on rocks,

and people do not plow rocks with oxen.

But you have changed fairness into poison;

you have changed what is right into a bitter taste.

13 You are happy that the town of Lo Debar was captured,

and you say, “We have taken Karnaim by our own strength.”

14 The Lord God All-Powerful says,

“Israel, I will bring a nation against you

that will make your people suffer from Lebo Hamath in the north

to the valley south of the Dead Sea.”

Amos 6:12–14 — American Standard Version (ASV)

12 Shall horses run upon the rock? will one plow there with oxen? that ye have turned justice into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood; 13 ye that rejoice in a thing of nought, that say, Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength? 14 For, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, saith Jehovah, the God of hosts; and they shall afflict you from the entrance of Hamath unto the brook of the Arabah.

Amos 6:12–14 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

12 Shall horses run upon the rock? will men plough thereon with oxen? For ye have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood, 13 —ye that rejoice in a thing of nought, that say, Have we not taken to us power by our own strength? 14 For behold, O house of Israel, saith Jehovah the God of hosts, I will raise up against you a nation; and they shall afflict you from the entering in of Hamath unto the torrent of the Arabah.

Amos 6:12–14 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

12 Do horses run on rocks?

Does a farmer plow the sea with oxen?

Yet, you have turned justice into something deadly

and what is righteous into poison.

13 How horrible it will be for those who rejoice over Lo Debar

and who say, “We were strong enough to capture Karnaim by ourselves.”

14 I am going to lead a nation to attack you, nation of Israel,

declares the Lord God of the Armies of the Nations.

They will oppress you from the border of Hamath to the valley of Arabah.

Amos 6:12–14 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

12 Do horses gallop on the cliffs;

does anyone plow there with oxen?

Yet you have turned justice into poison

and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood —

13 you who rejoice over Lo-debar

and say, “Didn’t we capture Karnaim

for ourselves by our own strength?”

14 But look, I am raising up a nation

against you, house of Israel —

this is the declaration of the Lord,

the God of Hosts—

and they will oppress you

from the entrance of Hamath

to the Brook of the Arabah.

Amos 6:12–14 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

12 Do horses run on rocks?

Does one plow the sea with oxen?

But you have turned justice into poison

and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood—

13 you who rejoice in Lo-debar,

who say, “Have we not by our own strength

taken Karnaim for ourselves?”

14 Indeed, I am raising up against you a nation,

O house of Israel, says the Lord, the God of hosts,

and they shall oppress you from Lebo-hamath

to the Wadi Arabah.

Amos 6:12–14 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

12 Do horses run on rocks, or does one plow the sea with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood! 13 You who rejoice over Lo-Debar, who say, “Have we not taken Karnaim for ourselves by our strength?” 14 Indeed, I am going to raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, declares Yahweh, the God of hosts. And they shall oppress you from Lebo-hamath up to the wadi of the Arabah.

Amos 6:12–14 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

12 Horses don’t run on rocky ground.

People don’t plow there with oxen.

But you have turned fair treatment into poison.

You have turned the fruit of right living into bitterness.

13 You are happy because you captured the town of Lo Debar.

You say, “We were strong enough to take Karnaim too.”

14 But the Lord God rules over all. He announces, “People of Israel,

I will stir up a nation against you.

They will crush you from Lebo Hamath

all the way down to the Arabah Valley.”
