2 Chronicles 24:20–22

Joash Murders Son of Jehoiada

20 aThen the Spirit of God 1came on Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people and said to them, “Thus God has said, ‘bWhy do you transgress the commandments of the Lord and do not prosper? cBecause you have forsaken the Lord, He has also forsaken you.’ ”

21 So athey conspired against him and at the command of the king they stoned him 1to death in the court of the house of the Lord.

22 Thus Joash the king did not remember the kindness which his father Jehoiada had shown him, but he murdered his son. And as he died he said, “May athe Lord see and 1avenge!”

20 Then the Spirit of God came on Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood before the people and said, “This is what God says: ‘Why do you disobey the Lord’s commands? You will not prosper. Because you have forsaken the Lord, he has forsaken you.’ ”

21 But they plotted against him, and by order of the king they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the Lord’s temple. 22 King Joash did not remember the kindness Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had shown him but killed his son, who said as he lay dying, “May the Lord see this and call you to account.”

Zechariah’s last words as he died were, “May the Lord see what they are doing and avenge my death!”

21 But the people made evil plans against Zechariah. The king ordered them to kill Zechariah by throwing stones at him. They did it in the courtyard of the Lord’s temple. 22 King Joash didn’t remember how kind Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had been to him. So he killed Jehoiada’s son.

As Zechariah was dying he said, “May the Lord see this. May he hold you accountable.”
