Isaiah 2:17–22 — The New International Version (NIV)

17 The arrogance of man will be brought low

and human pride humbled;

the Lord alone will be exalted in that day,

18 and the idols will totally disappear.

19 People will flee to caves in the rocks

and to holes in the ground

from the fearful presence of the Lord

and the splendor of his majesty,

when he rises to shake the earth.

20 In that day people will throw away

to the moles and bats

their idols of silver and idols of gold,

which they made to worship.

21 They will flee to caverns in the rocks

and to the overhanging crags

from the fearful presence of the Lord

and the splendor of his majesty,

when he rises to shake the earth.

22 Stop trusting in mere humans,

who have but a breath in their nostrils.

Why hold them in esteem?

Isaiah 2:17–22 — English Standard Version (ESV)

17 And the haughtiness of man shall be humbled,

and the lofty pride of men shall be brought low,

and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.

18 And the idols shall utterly pass away.

19 And people shall enter the caves of the rocks

and the holes of the ground,

from before the terror of the Lord,

and from the splendor of his majesty,

when he rises to terrify the earth.

20 In that day mankind will cast away

their idols of silver and their idols of gold,

which they made for themselves to worship,

to the moles and to the bats,

21 to enter the caverns of the rocks

and the clefts of the cliffs,

from before the terror of the Lord,

and from the splendor of his majesty,

when he rises to terrify the earth.

22 Stop regarding man

in whose nostrils is breath,

for of what account is he?

Isaiah 2:17–22 — New Living Translation (NLT)

17 Human pride will be humbled,

and human arrogance will be brought down.

Only the Lord will be exalted

on that day of judgment.

18 Idols will completely disappear.

19 When the Lord rises to shake the earth,

his enemies will crawl into holes in the ground.

They will hide in caves in the rocks

from the terror of the Lord

and the glory of his majesty.

20 On that day of judgment they will abandon the gold and silver idols

they made for themselves to worship.

They will leave their gods to the rodents and bats,

21 while they crawl away into caverns

and hide among the jagged rocks in the cliffs.

They will try to escape the terror of the Lord

and the glory of his majesty

as he rises to shake the earth.

22 Don’t put your trust in mere humans.

They are as frail as breath.

What good are they?

Isaiah 2:17–22 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

17 The loftiness of man shall be bowed down,

And the haughtiness of men shall be brought low;

The Lord alone will be exalted in that day,

18 But the idols He shall utterly abolish.

19 They shall go into the holes of the rocks,

And into the caves of the earth,

From the terror of the Lord

And the glory of His majesty,

When He arises to shake the earth mightily.

20 In that day a man will cast away his idols of silver

And his idols of gold,

Which they made, each for himself to worship,

To the moles and bats,

21 To go into the clefts of the rocks,

And into the crags of the rugged rocks,

From the terror of the Lord

And the glory of His majesty,

When He arises to shake the earth mightily.

22 Sever yourselves from such a man,

Whose breath is in his nostrils;

For of what account is he?

Isaiah 2:17–22 — New Century Version (NCV)

17 At that time proud people will be made humble,

and they will bow low with shame.

At that time only the Lord will be praised,

18 but all the idols will be gone.

19 People will run to caves in the rocky cliffs

and will dig holes and hide in the ground

from the anger of the Lord

and his great power,

when he stands to shake the earth.

20 At that time people will throw away

their gold and silver idols,

which they made for themselves to worship;

they will throw them away to the bats and moles.

21 Then the people will hide in caves

and cracks in the rocks

from the anger of the Lord

and his great power,

when he stands to shake the earth.

22 You should stop trusting in people to save you,

because people are only human;

they aren’t able to help you.

Isaiah 2:17–22 — American Standard Version (ASV)

17 And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be brought low; and Jehovah alone shall be exalted in that day. 18 And the idols shall utterly pass away. 19 And men shall go into the caves of the rocks, and into the holes of the earth, from before the terror of Jehovah, and from the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake mightily the earth. 20 In that day men shall cast away their idols of silver, and their idols of gold, which have been made for them to worship, to the moles and to the bats; 21 to go into the caverns of the rocks, and into the clefts of the ragged rocks, from before the terror of Jehovah, and from the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake mightily the earth. 22 Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils; for wherein is he to be accounted of?

Isaiah 2:17–22 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

17 And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be brought low; and Jehovah alone shall be exalted in that day: 18 and the idols shall utterly pass away. 19 And they shall go into the caves of the rocks, and into the holes of the earth, from before the terror of Jehovah, and from the glory of his majesty, when he shall arise to terrify the earth. 20 In that day men shall cast away their idols of silver and their idols of gold, which they made each for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats; 21 to go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the fissures of the cliffs, from before the terror of Jehovah, and from the glory of his majesty, when he shall arise to terrify the earth. 22 Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils; for what account is to be made of him?

Isaiah 2:17–22 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

17 Then arrogant people will be brought down,

and high and mighty people will be humbled.

On that day the Lord alone will be honored.

18 Then idols will disappear completely.

19 People will go into caves in the rocks

and into holes in the ground

because of the Lord’s terrifying presence

and the honor of his majesty

when he rises to terrify the earth.

20 On that day people will throw to the moles and the bats

the silver and gold idols that they made

for themselves to worship.

21 They will go into caves in the rocks

and into cracks in the cliffs

because of the Lord’s terrifying presence

and the honor of his majesty

when he rises to terrify the earth.

22 Stop trusting people.

Their life is in their nostrils.

How can they be worth anything?

Isaiah 2:17–22 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

17 So human pride will be brought low,

and the loftiness of men will be humbled;

the Lord alone will be exalted on that day.

18 The idols will vanish completely.

19 People will go into caves in the rocks

and holes in the ground,

away from the terror of the Lord

and from His majestic splendor,

when He rises to terrify the earth.

20 On that day people will throw

their silver and gold idols,

which they made to worship,

to the moles and the bats.

21 They will go into the caves of the rocks

and the crevices in the cliffs,

away from the terror of the Lord

and from His majestic splendor,

when He rises to terrify the earth.

22 Put no more trust in man,

who has only the breath in his nostrils.

What is he really worth?

Isaiah 2:17–22 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

17 The haughtiness of people shall be humbled,

and the pride of everyone shall be brought low;

and the Lord alone will be exalted on that day.

18 The idols shall utterly pass away.

19 Enter the caves of the rocks

and the holes of the ground,

from the terror of the Lord,

and from the glory of his majesty,

when he rises to terrify the earth.

20 On that day people will throw away

to the moles and to the bats

their idols of silver and their idols of gold,

which they made for themselves to worship,

21 to enter the caverns of the rocks

and the clefts in the crags,

from the terror of the Lord,

and from the glory of his majesty,

when he rises to terrify the earth.

22 Turn away from mortals,

who have only breath in their nostrils,

for of what account are they?

Isaiah 2:17–22 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

17 And the haughtiness of the people shall be humbled,

and the pride of everyone shall be brought low,

and Yahweh alone will be exalted on that day.

18 And the idols shall pass away entirely,

19 and they will enter into the caves of the rocks

and into the holes of the ground

from the presence of the terror of Yahweh

and from the glory of his majesty

when he rises to terrify the earth.

20 On that day humanity will throw away its idols of silver

and its idols of gold,

which they made for it to worship,

to the rodents and to the bats—

21 to enter into the crevices of the rocks

and into the clefts of the crags

from the presence of the terror of Yahweh

and from the glory of his majesty,

when he rises to terrify the earth.

22 Turn away from humanity,

who has breath in its nostrils,

for by what is it esteemed?

Isaiah 2:17–22 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

17 A man who brags will be brought low.

Men who are proud will be put to shame.

The Lord alone will be honored at that time.

18 And the statues of gods will totally disappear.

19 People will run and hide in caves in the rocks.

They will go into holes in the ground.

They will run away from the terror of the Lord.

They will run when he comes in glory and majesty.

When he comes, he will shake the earth.

20 Men had made some statues of gods out of silver.

They had made others out of gold.

Then they worshiped them.

But when the Lord comes,

they will throw the statues away to the rodents and bats.

21 They will run and hide in caves in the rocks.

They will go into holes in the cliffs.

They will run away from the terror of the Lord.

They will run when he comes in glory and majesty.

When he comes, he will shake the earth.

22 Stop trusting man. He can’t help you.

He only lives for a little while.

What good is he?

Isaiah 2:17–22 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

17 The pride of man will be humbled

And the loftiness of men will be abased;

And the Lord alone will be exalted in that day,

18 But the idols will completely vanish.

19 Men will go into caves of the rocks

And into holes of the ground

Before the terror of the Lord

And the splendor of His majesty,

When He arises to make the earth tremble.

20 In that day men will cast away to the moles and the bats

Their idols of silver and their idols of gold,

Which they made for themselves to worship,

21 In order to go into the caverns of the rocks and the clefts of the cliffs

Before the terror of the Lord and the splendor of His majesty,

When He arises to make the earth tremble.

22 Stop regarding man, whose breath of life is in his nostrils;

For why should he be esteemed?
