Isaiah 9:8–10:34
8 The Lord sent a word into Jacob,
And it hath lighted upon Israel.
9 And all the people shall hknow,
Even iEphraim and the inhabitant of kSamaria,
That say in the pride and stoutness of heart,
10 The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones:
lThe sycomores are cut down, but we will mchange them into cedars.
11 Therefore the Lord shall nset up the adversaries of oRezin against him,
And †join his enemies together;
12 pThe Syrians before, and qthe Philistines behind;
And they shall devour Israel †with open mouth.
rFor all this his anger is not turned away,
But his hand is stretched out still.
13 For sthe people turneth not unto him that smiteth them,
Neither do they seek the Lord of hosts.
14 Therefore the Lord will cut off from Israel thead and tail,
tuBranch and tvrush, xin one day.
15 The ancient and yhonourable, he is the head;
And zthe prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.
16 For ||athe leaders of this people zcause them to err;
And ||athey that are led of them are †adestroyed.
17 Therefore bthe Lord shall have no joy in their young men,
Neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows:
For every one is can hypocrite and an evildoer,
And every mouth speaketh ||ccfolly.
dFor all this his anger is not turned away,
But his hand is stretched out still.
18 For wickedness eburneth as the fire:
It shall devour fthe briers and thorns,
And shall kindle in gthe thickets of the forest,
And they shall mount up like hthe lifting up of smoke.
19 Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts is the land darkened,
And the people shall be as the †fuel of the fire:
iNo man shall spare his brother.
20 And he shall †snatch on the right hand, and be hungry;
And khe shall eat on the left hand, and kthey shall not be satisfied:
lThey shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm:
21 mManasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh:
And nthey together shall be against Judah.
dFor all this his anger is not turned away,
But his hand is stretched out still.
10 Woe unto athem that decree unrighteous decrees,
And ||that write aagrievousness which they have prescribed;
2 To turn aside the needy from judgment,
And to take away the right from bthe poor of my people,
bbThat widows may be their prey,
And that bthey may rob the fatherless!
3 And cwhat will ye do in dthe day of cvisitation,
And in ethe desolation which shall come ffrom far?
To whom will ye flee for help?
And where will ye leave your glory?
4 gWithout me they shall bow down under the prisoners,
And they shall fall under the slain.
hFor all this his anger is not turned away,
*But his hand is stretched out still.
5 ||O †Assyrian, ithe rod of mine anger,
||And ithe staff in their hand is mine indignation.
6 I will send him against kan hypocritical nation,
And against the people of my wrath lwill I give him a charge,
mTo take the spoil, and to take the prey,
And †to tread them down like the mire of the streets.
7 Howbeit nhe meaneth not so,
Neither doth his heart think so;
But it is in his heart to destroy
And cut off nations not a few.
8 oFor he saith, Are not my princes altogether kings?
9 Is not pCalno as qCarchemish?
10 wAs my hand hath found the kingdoms of xthe idols,
And whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of uSamaria;
11 Shall I not, as I have done unto uSamaria and her xidols,
So do to Jerusalem and her yidols?
12 Wherefore it shall come to pass, that zwhen the Lord hath performed his whole work
aUpon mount Zion and on Jerusalem,
bI will †punish the fruit †of the stout heart of cthe king of Assyria,
And the glory of his high looks.
13 dFor he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done it,
And eby my wisdom; for I am prudent:
And I have removed the bounds of the people,
And have robbed their treasures,
And I have put down the inhabitants ||like fa valiant man:
14 And gmy hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people:
And as one gathereth eggs that are left,
Have I gathered all the earth;
And there was none that moved the wing,
Or opened the mouth, or hpeeped.
15 Shall the axe iboast itself against him that heweth therewith?
Or shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it?
||As if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up,
Or as if the staff should lift up ||itself, as if it were no wood.
16 Therefore shall kthe Lord, the Lord of hosts,
Send among his lfat ones mleanness;
And under his glory he shall kindle a burning
Like the burning of a fire.
17 And the light of Israel shall be for a fire,
And his Holy One for a flame:
And nit shall burn and devour ohis thorns and his briers pin one day;
18 And shall consume qthe glory of his forest, and of rhis fruitful field,
†Both soul and body:
And they shall be as when ta standardbearer fainteth.
19 And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be †few,
That a child may write them.
20 And it shall come to pass uin that day,
That the remnant of Israel,
And vsuch as are escaped of the house of Jacob,
wShall no more again stay upon him that smote them;
But xshall stay upon the Lord,
The Holy One of Israel, in truth.
21 yThe remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob,
Unto zthe mighty God.
22 For athough thy people Israel be bas the sand of the sea,
Yet a remnant †of them shall return:
cThe consumption decreed shall overflow ||with righteousness.
23 For the Lord God of hosts shall dmake a consumption, even determined,
In the midst of all the land.
24 Therefore thus saith the Lord God of hosts,
O my people that dwellest in Zion,
eBe not afraid of the Assyrian:
He shall smite thee with fa rod,
||And shall lift up his fstaff against thee, gafter hthe manner of Egypt.
25 For iyet ja very little while, and kthe indignation shall cease,
And mine anger in their destruction.
26 And lthe Lord of hosts shall stir up a scourge for him
According to mthe slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb:
And as nhis rod was upon the sea,
So shall he lift it up gafter hthe manner of Egypt.
27 And it shall come to pass oin that day,
That phis burden †shall be taken away from off thy shoulder,
And his yoke from off thy neck,
And the yoke qshall be destroyed because of rthe anointing.
28 He is come to rrAiath, he is passed to sMigron;
At tMichmash he hath laid up his ucarriages:
29 They are gone over vthe passage: they have taken up their lodging at wGeba;
xRamah is afraid; yGibeah of Saul is fled.
30 †Lift up thy voice, O daughter of zGallim:
Cause it to be heard unto Laish, O poor aAnathoth.
31 bMadmenah is removed;
The inhabitants of Gebim gather themselves to flee.
32 As yet shall he remain at cNob that day:
He shall dshake his hand eagainst eethe mount of fthe daughter of Zion,
The hill of Jerusalem.
33 Behold, gthe Lord, the Lord of hosts,
Shall lop hthe bough with terror:
And ithe high ones of stature shall be hewn down,
And the haughty shall be humbled.
34 And he shall cut down kthe thickets of the forest with iron,
