Hebrews 1:4–10 — The New International Version (NIV)

So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

For to which of the angels did God ever say,

“You are my Son;

today I have become your Father”?

Or again,

“I will be his Father,

and he will be my Son”?

And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says,

“Let all God’s angels worship him.”

In speaking of the angels he says,

“He makes his angels spirits,

and his servants flames of fire.”

But about the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;

a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.

You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;

therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions

by anointing you with the oil of joy.”

10 He also says,

“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,

and the heavens are the work of your hands.

You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;

therefore God, your God, has anointed you

with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”

“You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning,

Hebrews 1:4–10 — New Living Translation (NLT)

This shows that the Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is greater than their names.

For God never said to any angel what he said to Jesus:

“You are my Son.

Today I have become your Father.”

God also said,

“I will be his Father,

and he will be my Son.”

And when he brought his supreme Son into the world, God said,

“Let all of God’s angels worship him.”

Regarding the angels, he says,

“He sends his angels like the winds,

his servants like flames of fire.”

But to the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever.

You rule with a scepter of justice.

You love justice and hate evil.

Therefore, O God, your God has anointed you,

pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else.”

10 He also says to the Son,

“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundation of the earth

and made the heavens with your hands.

Hebrews 1:4–10 — New Century Version (NCV)

The Son became much greater than the angels, and God gave him a name that is much greater than theirs.

This is because God never said to any of the angels,

“You are my Son.

Today I have become your Father.”

Nor did God say of any angel,

“I will be his Father,

and he will be my Son.”

And when God brings his firstborn Son into the world, he says,

“Let all God’s angels worship him.”

This is what God said about the angels:

“God makes his angels become like winds.

He makes his servants become like flames of fire.”

But God said this about his Son:

“God, your throne will last forever and ever.

You will rule your kingdom with fairness.

You love right and hate evil,

so God has chosen you from among your friends;

he has set you apart with much joy.”

10 God also says,

“Lord, in the beginning you made the earth,

and your hands made the skies.

For to which of the angels said he ever, Thou art my Son: this day have I begotten thee? and again, I will be to him for father, and he shall be to me for son? and again, when he brings in the firstborn into the habitable world, he says, And let all God’s angels worship him. And as to the angels he says, Who makes his angels spirits and his ministers a flame of fire; but as to the Son, Thy throne, O God, is to the age of the age, and a sceptre of uprightness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness and hast hated lawlessness; therefore God, thy God, has anointed thee with oil of gladness above thy companions. 10 And, Thou in the beginning, Lord, hast founded the earth, and works of thy hands are the heavens.

Hebrews 1:4–10 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

The Son has become greater than the angels since he has been given a name that is superior to theirs. God never said to any of his angels,

“You are my Son.

Today I have become your Father.”

And God never said to any of his angels,

“I will be his Father,

and he will be my Son.”

When God was about to send his firstborn Son into the world, he said,

“All of God’s angels must worship him.”

God said about the angels,

“He makes his messengers winds.

He makes his servants flames of fire.”

But God said about his Son,

“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.

The scepter in your kingdom is a scepter for justice.

You have loved what is right and hated what is wrong.

That is why God, your God,

anointed you, rather than your companions, with the oil of joy.”

10 God also said,

“Lord, in the beginning you laid the foundation of the earth.

With your own hands you made the heavens.

Hebrews 1:4–10 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

So He became higher in rank than the angels, just as the name He inherited is superior to theirs.

For to which of the angels did He ever say, You are My Son; today I have become Your Father, or again, I will be His Father, and He will be My Son? When He again brings His firstborn into the world, He says, And all God’s angels must worship Him. And about the angels He says:

He makes His angels winds,

is forever and ever,

You have loved righteousness

God never said to any of the angels,

Or,

“I will be his Father.

And he will be my Son.”

God’s first and only Son is over all things. When God brings him into the world, he says,

“Let all of God’s angels worship him.”

Here is something else God says about the angels.

“God makes his angels to be like winds.

He makes those who serve him to be like flashes of lightning.”

But here is what he says about the Son.

“You are God. Your throne will last for ever and ever.

Your kingdom will be ruled by what is right.

You have loved what is right and hated what is evil.

So your God has placed you above your companions.

He has filled you with joy by pouring the sacred oil on your head.”

10 He also says,

“Lord, in the beginning you made the earth secure. You placed it on its foundations.

The heavens are the work of your hands.
