5 saying,

“When will the New Moon be over

that we may sell grain,

and the Sabbath be ended

that we may market wheat?”—

skimping on the measure,

boosting the price

and cheating with dishonest scales,

6 buying the poor with silver

and the needy for a pair of sandals,

selling even the sweepings with the wheat.

5 saying, “When will the new moon be over,

that we may sell grain?

And the Sabbath,

that we may offer wheat for sale,

that we may make the ephah small and the shekel great

and deal deceitfully with false balances,

6 that we may buy the poor for silver

and the needy for a pair of sandals

and sell the chaff of the wheat?”

5 You can’t wait for the Sabbath day to be over

and the religious festivals to end

so you can get back to cheating the helpless.

You measure out grain with dishonest measures

and cheat the buyer with dishonest scales.

6 And you mix the grain you sell

with chaff swept from the floor.

Then you enslave poor people

for one piece of silver or a pair of sandals.

5 Saying:

“When will the New Moon be past,

That we may sell grain?

And the Sabbath,

That we may trade wheat?

Making the ephah small and the shekel large,

Falsifying the scales by deceit,

6 That we may buy the poor for silver,

And the needy for a pair of sandals—

Even sell the bad wheat?”

5 “When will the New Moon festival be over

so we can sell grain?

When will the Sabbath be over

so we can bring out wheat to sell?

We can charge them more

and give them less,

and we can change the scales to cheat the people.

6 We will buy poor people for silver,

and needy people for the price of a pair of sandals.

We will even sell the wheat that was swept up from the floor.”

5 saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and dealing falsely with balances of deceit; 6 that we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes, and sell the refuse of the wheat?

5 saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat? making the ephah small and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances for deceit: 6 that we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; and that we may sell the refuse of the wheat.

5 You say to yourselves, 

“When will the New Moon Festival be over 

so that we can sell more grain? 

When will the day of rest—a holy day, be over 

so that we can sell more wheat? 

We can shrink the size of the bushel baskets, 

increase the cost, 

and cheat with dishonest scales. 

6 We can buy the poor with money 

and the needy for a pair of sandals. 

We can sell the husks mixed in with the wheat.” 

5 asking, “When will the New Moon be over

so we may sell grain,

and the Sabbath,

so we may market wheat?

We can reduce the measure

while increasing the price

and cheat with dishonest scales.

6 We can buy the poor with silver

and the needy for a pair of sandals

and even sell the chaff!”

5 saying, “When will the new moon be over

so that we may sell grain;

and the sabbath,

so that we may offer wheat for sale?

We will make the ephah small and the shekel great,

and practice deceit with false balances,

6 buying the poor for silver

and the needy for a pair of sandals,

and selling the sweepings of the wheat.”

5 saying, “When will the new moon be over, so that we can sell grain? And the Sabbath, so that we can open the grain bins, that we can make the ephah small and make the shekel large, and can practice deceit with a set of scales of deceit? 6 That we can buy the powerless with silver and the poor for the sake of a pair of sandals, and we can sell the waste of the grain?”

5 You say,

“When will the New Moon Feast be over?

Then we can sell our grain.

When will the Sabbath day come to an end?

Then people can buy our wheat.”

But you don’t measure out the right amount.

You raise your prices.

You cheat others by using dishonest scales.

6 You buy poor people to make slaves out of them.

You buy those who are in need for a mere pair of sandals.

You even sell the worthless parts of your wheat.

5 saying,

“When will the new moon be over,

So that we may sell grain,

And the sabbath, that we may open the wheat market,

To make the bushel smaller and the shekel bigger,

And to cheat with dishonest scales,

6 So as to buy the helpless for money

And the needy for a pair of sandals,

And that we may sell the refuse of the wheat?”
