Pattern of Sin and Judgment

2 The Angel of the Lord j went up from Gilgal to Bochim k and said, “I brought you out of Egypt and led you into the land l I had promised to your fathers. m I also said: I will never break My covenant with you. You are not to make a covenant n with the people who are living in this land, and you are to tear down their altars. o p But you have not obeyed Me. What is this you have done? Therefore, I now say: I will not drive out these people before you. q They will be thorns r s in your sides, t and their gods will be a trap for you.” u When the Angel of the Lord had spoken these words to all the Israelites, the people wept loudly. So they named that place Bochim v and offered sacrifices there to the Lord.

Judges 2:1–5 — The New International Version (NIV)

The angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land I swore to give to your ancestors. I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you, and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall break down their altars.’ Yet you have disobeyed me. Why have you done this? And I have also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; they will become traps for you, and their gods will become snares to you.’ ”

When the angel of the Lord had spoken these things to all the Israelites, the people wept aloud, and they called that place Bokim. There they offered sacrifices to the Lord.

So now I declare that I will no longer drive out the people living in your land. They will be thorns in your sides, and their gods will be a constant temptation to you.”

When the angel of the Lord finished speaking to all the Israelites, the people wept loudly. So they called the place Bokim (which means “weeping”), and they offered sacrifices there to the Lord.

After the angel gave Israel this message from the Lord, they cried loudly. So they named the place Bokim. There they offered sacrifices to the Lord.

“But you have disobeyed me. Why did you do it? I have something to tell you. I will not drive those people out to make room for you. They will be like thorns in your sides. Their gods will be a trap to you.”

The angel of the Lord spoke those things to all of the people of Israel. Then the people began to sob out loud. So that place was called Bokim. The people offered sacrifices to the Lord there.
