John 18:1–9 — The New International Version (NIV)

When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.

Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, Who is it you want?”

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.

I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) When Jesus said, I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

Again he asked them, Who is it you want?”

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.

Jesus answered, I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: I have not lost one of those you gave me.”

John 18:1–9 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples. Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.

John 18:1–9 — New Living Translation (NLT)

After saying these things, Jesus crossed the Kidron Valley with his disciples and entered a grove of olive trees. Judas, the betrayer, knew this place, because Jesus had often gone there with his disciples. The leading priests and Pharisees had given Judas a contingent of Roman soldiers and Temple guards to accompany him. Now with blazing torches, lanterns, and weapons, they arrived at the olive grove.

Jesus fully realized all that was going to happen to him, so he stepped forward to meet them. Who are you looking for?” he asked.

“Jesus the Nazarene,” they replied.

I Am he,” Jesus said. (Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.) As Jesus said I Am he,” they all drew back and fell to the ground! Once more he asked them, Who are you looking for?”

And again they replied, “Jesus the Nazarene.”

I told you that I Am he,” Jesus said. And since I am the one you want, let these others go.” He did this to fulfill his own statement: I did not lose a single one of those you have given me.”

John 18:1–9 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples. Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, Whom are you seeking?”

They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.”

Jesus said to them, I am He.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. Now when He said to them, I am He, they drew back and fell to the ground.

Then He asked them again, Whom are you seeking?”

And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”

Jesus answered, I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,” that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.”

John 18:1–9 — New Century Version (NCV)

When Jesus finished praying, he went with his followers across the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and Jesus and his followers went into it.

Judas knew where this place was, because Jesus met there often with his followers. Judas was the one who turned against Jesus. So Judas came there with a group of soldiers and some guards from the leading priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns, and weapons.

Knowing everything that would happen to him, Jesus went out and asked, “Who is it you are looking for?”

They answered, “Jesus from Nazareth.”

“I am he,” Jesus said. (Judas, the one who turned against Jesus, was standing there with them.) When Jesus said, “I am he,” they moved back and fell to the ground.

Jesus asked them again, “Who is it you are looking for?”

They said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”

“I told you that I am he,” Jesus said. “So if you are looking for me, let the others go.” This happened so that the words Jesus said before would come true: “I have not lost any of the ones you gave me.”

John 18:1–9 — American Standard Version (ASV)

When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples. Now Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus oft-times resorted thither with his disciples. Judas then, having received the band of soldiers, and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming upon him, went forth, and saith unto them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them. When therefore he said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. Again therefore he asked them, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered, I told you that I am he; if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: that the word might be fulfilled which he spake, Of those whom thou hast given me I lost not one.

John 18:1–9 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Jesus, having said these things, went out with his disciples beyond the torrent Cedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, he and his disciples. And Judas also, who delivered him up, knew the place, because Jesus was often there, in company with his disciples. Judas therefore, having got the band, and officers of the chief priests and Pharisees, comes there with lanterns and torches and weapons. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that were coming upon him, went forth and said to them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus the Nazaraean. Jesus says to them, I am he. And Judas also, who delivered him up, stood with them. When therefore he said to them, I am he, they went away backward and fell to the ground. He demanded of them therefore again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus the Nazaraean. Jesus answered, I told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go away; that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, As to those whom thou hast given me, I have not lost one of them.

John 18:1–9 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

After Jesus finished his prayer, he went with his disciples to the other side of the Kidron Valley. They entered the garden that was there.

Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place because Jesus and his disciples often gathered there. So Judas took a troop of soldiers and the guards from the chief priests and Pharisees and went to the garden. They were carrying lanterns, torches, and weapons.

Jesus knew everything that was going to happen to him. So he went to meet them and asked, “Who are you looking for?”

They answered him, “Jesus from Nazareth.”

Jesus told them, “I am he.”

Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with the crowd. When Jesus told them, “I am he,” the crowd backed away and fell to the ground.

Jesus asked them again, “Who are you looking for?”

They said, “Jesus from Nazareth.”

Jesus replied, “I told you that I am he. So if you are looking for me, let these other men go.” In this way what Jesus had said came true: “I lost none of those you gave me.”

John 18:1–9 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

After Jesus had said these things, He went out with His disciples across the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, and He and His disciples went into it. Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with His disciples. So Judas took a company of soldiers and some temple police from the chief priests and the Pharisees and came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

Then Jesus, knowing everything that was about to happen to Him, went out and said to them, Who is it you’re looking for?”

“Jesus the Nazarene,” they answered.

I am He,” Jesus told them.

Judas, who betrayed Him, was also standing with them. When He told them, I am He,” they stepped back and fell to the ground.

Then He asked them again, Who is it you’re looking for?”

“Jesus the Nazarene,” they said.

I told you I am He,” Jesus replied. So if you’re looking for Me, let these men go.” This was to fulfill the words He had said: I have not lost one of those You have given Me.”

John 18:1–9 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

After Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the Kidron valley to a place where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with his disciples. So Judas brought a detachment of soldiers together with police from the chief priests and the Pharisees, and they came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. Then Jesus, knowing all that was to happen to him, came forward and asked them, Whom are you looking for?” They answered, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus replied, I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. When Jesus said to them, I am he,” they stepped back and fell to the ground. Again he asked them, Whom are you looking for?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus answered, I told you that I am he. So if you are looking for me, let these men go.” This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken, I did not lose a single one of those whom you gave me.”

John 18:1–9 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

When Jesus had said these things, he went out with his disciples to the other side of the ravine of the Kidron, where there was a garden into which he and his disciples entered. (Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, also knew about the place, because Jesus often gathered there with his disciples.) So Judas, taking the cohort and officers from the chief priests and from the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. Then Jesus, because he knew all the things that were coming upon him, went out and said to them, “Who are you looking for?” They replied to him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He said to them, “I am he.” (Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, was also standing with them.) So when he said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. Then he asked them again, “Who are you looking for?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus replied, “I said to you that I am he! So if you are looking for me, let these men go,” in order that the word that he had spoken would be fulfilled: “Those whom you have given to me—I have not lost anyone of them.”

John 18:1–9 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

When Jesus had finished praying, he left with his disciples. They crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a grove of olive trees. Jesus and his disciples went into it.

Judas knew the place. He was going to hand Jesus over to his enemies. Jesus had often met in that place with his disciples. So Judas came to the grove. He was guiding a group of soldiers and some officials. The chief priests and the Pharisees had sent them. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

Jesus knew everything that was going to happen to him. So he went out and asked them, “Who is it that you want?”

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.

“I am he,” Jesus said.

Judas, who was going to hand Jesus over, was standing there with them. When Jesus said, “I am he,” they moved back. Then they fell to the ground.

He asked them again, “Who is it that you want?”

They said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”

“I told you I am he,” Jesus answered. “If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” This happened so that the words Jesus had spoken would come true. He had said, “I have not lost anyone God has given me.”

John 18:1–9 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

When Jesus had spoken these words, He went forth with His disciples over the ravine of the Kidron, where there was a garden, in which He entered with His disciples.

Now Judas also, who was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had often met there with His disciples.

Judas then, having received the Roman cohort and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.

So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and said to them, Whom do you seek?”

They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He said to them, I am He. And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them.

So when He said to them, I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

Therefore He again asked them, Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.”

Jesus answered, I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way,”

to fulfill the word which He spoke, Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one.”
