Hosea 8:1–4 — The New International Version (NIV)

“Put the trumpet to your lips!

An eagle is over the house of the Lord

because the people have broken my covenant

and rebelled against my law.

Israel cries out to me,

‘Our God, we acknowledge you!’

But Israel has rejected what is good;

an enemy will pursue him.

They set up kings without my consent;

they choose princes without my approval.

With their silver and gold

they make idols for themselves

to their own destruction.

Hosea 8:1–4 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

Set the trumpet to thy mouth.

He shall come as an eagle against the house of the Lord,

Because they have transgressed my covenant,

And trespassed against my law.

Israel shall cry unto me, My God, we know thee.

Israel hath cast off the thing that is good:

The enemy shall pursue him.

They have set up kings, but not by me:

They have made princes, and I knew it not:

Of their silver and their gold have they made them idols,

That they may be cut off.

Hosea 8:1–4 — New Living Translation (NLT)

“Sound the alarm!

The enemy descends like an eagle on the people of the Lord,

for they have broken my covenant

and revolted against my law.

Now Israel pleads with me,

‘Help us, for you are our God!’

But it is too late.

The people of Israel have rejected what is good,

and now their enemies will chase after them.

The people have appointed kings without my consent,

and princes without my approval.

By making idols for themselves from their silver and gold,

they have brought about their own destruction.

Hosea 8:1–4 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

Set the trumpet to your mouth!

He shall come like an eagle against the house of the Lord,

Because they have transgressed My covenant

And rebelled against My law.

Israel will cry to Me,

‘My God, we know You!’

Israel has rejected the good;

The enemy will pursue him.

“They set up kings, but not by Me;

They made princes, but I did not acknowledge them.

From their silver and gold

They made idols for themselves—

That they might be cut off.

Hosea 8:1–4 — New Century Version (NCV)

“Put the trumpet to your lips and give the warning!

The enemy swoops down on the Lord’s people like an eagle.

The Israelites have broken my agreement

and have turned against my teachings.

They cry out to me,

‘Our God, we in Israel know you!’

But Israel has rejected what is good,

so the enemy will chase them.

They chose their own kings

without asking my permission.

They chose their own leaders,

people I did not know.

They made their silver and gold into idols,

and for all this they will be destroyed.

Hosea 8:1–4 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Set the trumpet to thy mouth. As an eagle he cometh against the house of Jehovah, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law. They shall cry unto me, My God, we Israel know thee. Israel hath cast off that which is good: the enemy shall pursue him. They have set up kings, but not by me; they have made princes, and I knew it not: of their silver and their gold have they made them idols, that they may be cut off.

Hosea 8:1–4 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Set the trumpet to thy mouth. He cometh as an eagle against the house of Jehovah, because they have transgressed my covenant, and rebelled against my law. They shall cry unto me, My God, we know thee; we, Israel. Israel hath cast off good: the enemy shall pursue him. They have set up kings, but not by me; they have made princes, and I knew it not; of their silver and their gold have they made them idols, that they may be cut off.

Hosea 8:1–4 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

“Sound the alarm on the ram’s horn.

The enemy swoops down on the Lord’s temple like an eagle.

The people of Israel have rejected my promise

and rebelled against my teachings.

They cry out to me, ‘We acknowledge you as our God.’

However, they have rejected what is good.

The enemy will persecute them.

“They chose their own kings, kings I didn’t approve.

They chose their own princes, princes I didn’t know.

They chose to make idols with their own silver and gold.

Because of this, they will be destroyed.

Hosea 8:1–4 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Put the horn to your mouth!

One like an eagle comes

against the house of the Lord,

because they transgress My covenant

and rebel against My law.

Israel cries out to Me,

“My God, we know You!”

Israel has rejected what is good;

an enemy will pursue him.

They have installed kings,

but not through Me.

They have appointed leaders,

but without My approval.

They make their silver and gold

into idols for themselves

for their own destruction.

Hosea 8:1–4 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Set the trumpet to your lips!

One like a vulture is over the house of the Lord,

because they have broken my covenant,

and transgressed my law.

Israel cries to me,

“My God, we—Israel—know you!”

Israel has spurned the good;

the enemy shall pursue him.

They made kings, but not through me;

they set up princes, but without my knowledge.

With their silver and gold they made idols

for their own destruction.

Hosea 8:1–4 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Put to your lips the trumpet

like a vulture over the house of Yahweh,

because they have broken my covenant

and rebelled against my law.

They cry out to me,

“My God! We, Israel, know you!”

Israel has spurned the good;

the enemy will pursue him.

They appointed kings, but not through me;

they made officials, but without my knowledge.

With their silver and gold

they made idols for themselves

for their own destruction.

Hosea 8:1–4 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

The Lord said to me,

“Put a trumpet to your lips!

Give a warning to my people!

Assyria is like an eagle.

It is ready to attack my land.

My people have broken the covenant I made with them.

They have refused to obey my law.

Israel shouts to me,

‘We recognize you as our God!’

But they have turned away from what is good.

So an enemy will chase them.

My people appoint kings I do not want.

They choose princes without my permission.

They use their silver and gold

to make statues of gods.

That is how they destroy themselves.”

Hosea 8:1–4 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

Put the trumpet to your lips!

Like an eagle the enemy comes against the house of the Lord,

Because they have transgressed My covenant

And rebelled against My law.

They cry out to Me,

“My God, we of Israel know You!”

Israel has rejected the good;

The enemy will pursue him.

They have set up kings, but not by Me;

They have appointed princes, but I did not know it.

With their silver and gold they have made idols for themselves,

That they might be cut off.
