Hebrews 3:7–11

A Rest for the People of God

Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,

b“Today, if you hear his voice,

do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,

on the day of testing in the wilderness,

where your fathers put me to the test

and saw my works for cforty years.

10  Therefore I was provoked with that generation,

and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart;

they have not known my ways.’

11  dAs I swore in my wrath,

‘They shall not enter my rest.’ ”

Hebrews 3:7–11 — The New International Version (NIV)

So, as the Holy Spirit says:

“Today, if you hear his voice,

do not harden your hearts

as you did in the rebellion,

during the time of testing in the wilderness,

where your ancestors tested and tried me,

though for forty years they saw what I did.

10 That is why I was angry with that generation;

I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray,

and they have not known my ways.’

11 So I declared on oath in my anger,

‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ”

Hebrews 3:7–11 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. 10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. 11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)

Hebrews 3:7–11 — New Living Translation (NLT)

That is why the Holy Spirit says,

“Today when you hear his voice,

don’t harden your hearts

as Israel did when they rebelled,

when they tested me in the wilderness.

There your ancestors tested and tried my patience,

even though they saw my miracles for forty years.

10 So I was angry with them, and I said,

‘Their hearts always turn away from me.

They refuse to do what I tell them.’

11 So in my anger I took an oath:

‘They will never enter my place of rest.’ ”

Hebrews 3:7–11 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says:

“Today, if you will hear His voice,

Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,

In the day of trial in the wilderness,

Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me,

And saw My works forty years.

10 Therefore I was angry with that generation,

And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart,

And they have not known My ways.’

11 So I swore in My wrath,

‘They shall not enter My rest.’ ”

Hebrews 3:7–11 — New Century Version (NCV)

So it is as the Holy Spirit says:

“Today listen to what he says.

Do not be stubborn as in the past

when you turned against God,

when you tested God in the desert.

There your ancestors tried me and tested me

and saw the things I did for forty years.

10 I was angry with them.

I said, ‘They are not loyal to me

and have not understood my ways.’

11 I was angry and made a promise,

‘They will never enter my rest.’ ”

Hebrews 3:7–11 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Wherefore, even as the Holy Spirit saith,

To-day if ye shall hear his voice,

Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation,

Like as in the day of the trial in the wilderness,

Where your fathers tried me by proving me,

And saw my works forty years.

10 Wherefore I was displeased with this generation,

And said, They do always err in their heart:

But they did not know my ways;

11 As I sware in my wrath,

They shall not enter into my rest.

Hebrews 3:7–11 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Wherefore, even as says the Holy Spirit, To-day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness; where your fathers tempted me, by proving me, and saw my works forty years. 10 Wherefore I was wroth with this generation, and said, They always err in heart; and they have not known my ways; 11 so I swore in my wrath, If they shall enter into my rest.

Hebrews 3:7–11 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

As the Holy Spirit says,

“If you hear God speak today, don’t be stubborn.

Don’t be stubborn like those who rebelled

and tested me in the desert.

That is where your ancestors tested me,

10 although they had seen what I had done for 40 years.

That is why I was angry with those people. So I said,

‘Their hearts continue to stray,

and they have not learned my ways.’

11 So I angrily took a solemn oath

that they would never enter my place of rest.”

Hebrews 3:7–11 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says:

Today, if you hear His voice,

do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,

on the day of testing in the wilderness,

where your fathers tested Me, tried Me,

and saw My works 10 for 40 years.

Therefore I was provoked with that generation

and said, “They always go astray in their hearts,

and they have not known My ways.”

11 So I swore in My anger,

“They will not enter My rest.”

Hebrews 3:7–11 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,

“Today, if you hear his voice,

do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,

as on the day of testing in the wilderness,

where your ancestors put me to the test,

though they had seen my works 10 for forty years.

Therefore I was angry with that generation,

and I said, ‘They always go astray in their hearts,

and they have not known my ways.’

11 As in my anger I swore,

‘They will not enter my rest.’ ”

Hebrews 3:7–11 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says,

“Today, if you hear his voice,

do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,

in the day of testing in the wilderness,

where your fathers tested me by trial

and saw my works 10 for forty years.

Therefore I was angry with this generation,

and I said, ‘They always go astray in their heart,

and they do not know my ways.’

11 As I swore in my anger,

‘They will never enter into my rest.’ ”

Hebrews 3:7–11 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

The Holy Spirit says,

“Listen to his voice today.

If you hear it, don’t be stubborn.

You were stubborn when you opposed me.

You did that when you were put to the test in the desert.

There your people of long ago put me to the test.

For 40 years they saw what I did.

10 That is why I was angry with them.

I said, ‘Their hearts are always going down the wrong path.

They have not known my ways.’

11 So in my anger I took an oath.

I said, ‘They will never enjoy the rest I planned for them.’ ”

Hebrews 3:7–11 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says,

Today if you hear His voice,

Do not harden your hearts as when they provoked Me,

As in the day of trial in the wilderness,

Where your fathers tried Me by testing Me,

And saw My works for forty years.

10 Therefore I was angry with this generation,

And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart,

And they did not know My ways’;

11 As I swore in My wrath,

They shall not enter My rest.’ ”
