Job 28:1–5

Job Continues: Where Is Wisdom?

28 “Surely there is a mine for silver,

and a place for gold that they yrefine.

Iron is taken out of the earth,

and copper is smelted from the ore.

Man puts an end to darkness

and searches out to the farthest limit

the ore in zgloom and adeep darkness.

He opens shafts in a valley away from where anyone lives;

they are forgotten by travelers;

they hang in the air, far away from mankind; they swing to and fro.

As for the earth, bout of it comes bread,

but underneath it is turned up as by fire.

Job 28:1–5 — The New International Version (NIV)

There is a mine for silver

and a place where gold is refined.

Iron is taken from the earth,

and copper is smelted from ore.

Mortals put an end to the darkness;

they search out the farthest recesses

for ore in the blackest darkness.

Far from human dwellings they cut a shaft,

in places untouched by human feet;

far from other people they dangle and sway.

The earth, from which food comes,

is transformed below as by fire;

Job 28:1–5 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

Surely there is a vein for the silver,

And a place for gold where they fine it.

Iron is taken out of the earth,

And brass is molten out of the stone.

He setteth an end to darkness,

And searcheth out all perfection:

The stones of darkness, and the shadow of death.

The flood breaketh out from the inhabitant;

Even the waters forgotten of the foot:

They are dried up, they are gone away from men.

As for the earth, out of it cometh bread:

And under it is turned up as it were fire.

Job 28:1–5 — New Living Translation (NLT)

“People know where to mine silver

and how to refine gold.

They know where to dig iron from the earth

and how to smelt copper from rock.

They know how to shine light in the darkness

and explore the farthest regions of the earth

as they search in the dark for ore.

They sink a mine shaft into the earth

far from where anyone lives.

They descend on ropes, swinging back and forth.

Food is grown on the earth above,

but down below, the earth is melted as by fire.

Job 28:1–5 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

“Surely there is a mine for silver,

And a place where gold is refined.

Iron is taken from the earth,

And copper is smelted from ore.

Man puts an end to darkness,

And searches every recess

For ore in the darkness and the shadow of death.

He breaks open a shaft away from people;

In places forgotten by feet

They hang far away from men;

They swing to and fro.

As for the earth, from it comes bread,

But underneath it is turned up as by fire;

Job 28:1–5 — New Century Version (NCV)

“There are mines where people dig silver

and places where gold is made pure.

Iron is taken from the ground,

and copper is melted out of rocks.

Miners bring lights

and search deep into the mines

for ore in thick darkness.

Miners dig a tunnel far from where people live,

where no one has ever walked;

they work far from people, swinging and swaying from ropes.

Food grows on top of the earth,

but below ground things are changed as if by fire.

Job 28:1–5 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Surely there is a mine for silver,

And a place for gold which they refine.

Iron is taken out of the earth,

And copper is molten out of the stone.

Man setteth an end to darkness,

And searcheth out, to the furthest bound,

The stones of obscurity and of thick darkness.

He breaketh open a shaft away from where men sojourn;

They are forgotten of the foot;

They hang afar from men, they swing to and fro.

As for the earth, out of it cometh bread;

And underneath it is turned up as it were by fire.

Job 28:1–5 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold which they refine; Iron is taken out of the dust, and copper is molten out of the stone. Man putteth an end to the darkness, and exploreth to the utmost limit, the stones of darkness and of the shadow of death. He openeth a shaft far from the inhabitants of the earth: forgotten of the foot, they hang suspended; away below men they hover. As for the earth, out of it cometh bread, and underneath it is turned up as by fire;

Job 28:1–5 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

“There is a place where silver is mined

and a place where gold is refined.

Iron is taken from the ground,

and rocks are melted for ⸤their⸥ copper.

⸤Humans⸥ bring an end to darkness ⸤there⸥

and search to the limit of the gloomy, pitch-black rock.

They open up a mineshaft far from civilization,

where no one has set foot.

⸤In this shaft⸥ men dangle and swing back and forth.

“Above the ground food grows,

but beneath it the food decays as if ⸤it were burned⸥ by fire.

Job 28:1–5 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Surely there is a mine for silver

and a place where gold is refined.

Iron is taken from the ground,

and copper is smelted from ore.

A miner puts an end to the darkness;

he probes the deepest recesses

for ore in the gloomy darkness.

He cuts a shaft far from human habitation,

in places unknown to those who walk above ground.

Suspended far away from people,

the miners swing back and forth.

Food may come from the earth,

but below the surface the earth is transformed as by fire.

Job 28:1–5 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

“Surely there is a mine for silver,

and a place for gold to be refined.

Iron is taken out of the earth,

and copper is smelted from ore.

Miners put an end to darkness,

and search out to the farthest bound

the ore in gloom and deep darkness.

They open shafts in a valley away from human habitation;

they are forgotten by travelers,

they sway suspended, remote from people.

As for the earth, out of it comes bread;

but underneath it is turned up as by fire.

Job 28:1–5 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

“Indeed, there is a mine for silver

and a place for gold to be refined.

Iron is taken from dust,

and he pours out copper from ore.

He puts an end to darkness,

and he searches out the farthest limits

for the ore in gloom and deep shadow.

He breaks open a mine shaft away from where people dwell;

those who are forgotten by travelers,

they dangle, they sway far away from human beings.

As for the earth, from it comes food,

but underneath it, it is turned up as by fire.

Job 28:1–5 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

“There are mines where silver is found.

There are places where gold is purified.

Iron is taken out of the earth.

Copper is melted down from ore.

A miner lights up the darkness.

He searches for ore in the deepest pits.

He looks for it in the blackest darkness.

Far from where people live he cuts a tunnel.

He does it in places where others don’t go.

Far away from people he swings back and forth on ropes.

Food grows on the surface of the earth.

But far below, the earth is changed as if by fire.

Job 28:1–5 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

Surely there is a mine for silver

And a place where they refine gold.

Iron is taken from the dust,

And copper is smelted from rock.

Man puts an end to darkness,

And to the farthest limit he searches out

The rock in gloom and deep shadow.

“He sinks a shaft far from habitation,

Forgotten by the foot;

They hang and swing to and fro far from men.

“The earth, from it comes food,

And underneath it is turned up as fire.
