Isaiah 15:1–4 — The New International Version (NIV)

A prophecy against Moab:

Ar in Moab is ruined,

destroyed in a night!

Kir in Moab is ruined,

destroyed in a night!

Dibon goes up to its temple,

to its high places to weep;

Moab wails over Nebo and Medeba.

Every head is shaved

and every beard cut off.

In the streets they wear sackcloth;

on the roofs and in the public squares

they all wail,

prostrate with weeping.

Heshbon and Elealeh cry out,

their voices are heard all the way to Jahaz.

Therefore the armed men of Moab cry out,

and their hearts are faint.

Isaiah 15:1–4 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

The burden of Moab.

Because in the night Ar of Moab is laid waste, and brought to silence;

Because in the night Kir of Moab is laid waste, and brought to silence;

He is gone up to Bajith, and to Dibon, the high places, to weep:

Moab shall howl over Nebo, and over Medeba:

On all their heads shall be baldness, and every beard cut off.

In their streets they shall gird themselves with sackcloth:

On the tops of their houses, and in their streets,

Every one shall howl, weeping abundantly.

And Heshbon shall cry, and Elealeh:

Their voice shall be heard even unto Jahaz:

Therefore the armed soldiers of Moab shall cry out;

His life shall be grievous unto him.

Isaiah 15:1–4 — New Living Translation (NLT)

This message came to me concerning Moab:

In one night the town of Ar will be leveled,

and the city of Kir will be destroyed.

Your people will go to their temple in Dibon to mourn.

They will go to their sacred shrines to weep.

They will wail for the fate of Nebo and Medeba,

shaving their heads in sorrow and cutting off their beards.

They will wear burlap as they wander the streets.

From every home and public square will come the sound of wailing.

The people of Heshbon and Elealeh will cry out;

their voices will be heard as far away as Jahaz!

The bravest warriors of Moab will cry out in utter terror.

They will be helpless with fear.

Isaiah 15:1–4 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

The burden against Moab.

Because in the night Ar of Moab is laid waste

And destroyed,

Because in the night Kir of Moab is laid waste

And destroyed,

He has gone up to the temple and Dibon,

To the high places to weep.

Moab will wail over Nebo and over Medeba;

On all their heads will be baldness,

And every beard cut off.

In their streets they will clothe themselves with sackcloth;

On the tops of their houses

And in their streets

Everyone will wail, weeping bitterly.

Heshbon and Elealeh will cry out,

Their voice shall be heard as far as Jahaz;

Therefore the armed soldiers of Moab will cry out;

His life will be burdensome to him.

Isaiah 15:1–4 — New Century Version (NCV)

This is a message about Moab:

In one night armies took the wealth from Ar in Moab,

and it was destroyed.

In one night armies took the wealth from Kir in Moab,

and it was destroyed.

The people of Dibon go to the places of worship to cry.

The people of Moab cry for the cities of Nebo and Medeba.

Every head and beard has been shaved to show how sad Moab is.

In the streets they wear rough cloth to show their sadness.

On the roofs and in the public squares,

they are crying loudly.

People in the cities Heshbon and Elealeh cry out loud.

You can hear their voices far away in the city Jahaz.

Even the soldiers are frightened;

they are shaking with fear.

Isaiah 15:1–4 — American Standard Version (ASV)

The burden of Moab.

For in a night Ar of Moab is laid waste, and brought to nought; for in a night Kir of Moab is laid waste, and brought to nought. They are gone up to Bayith, and to Dibon, to the high places, to weep: Moab waileth over Nebo, and over Medeba; on all their heads is baldness, every beard is cut off. In their streets they gird themselves with sackcloth; on their housetops, and in their broad places, every one waileth, weeping abundantly. And Heshbon crieth out, and Elealeh; their voice is heard even unto Jahaz: therefore the armed men of Moab cry aloud; his soul trembleth within him.

Isaiah 15:1–4 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

The burden of Moab: For in the night of being laid waste, Ar of Moab is destroyed; for in the night of being laid waste, Kir of Moab is destroyed! He is gone up to Bajith, and to Dibon, to the high places, to weep; Moab howleth over Nebo, and over Medeba; on all their heads is baldness, every beard is cut off. In their streets they are girded with sackcloth; on their roofs, and in their broadways, every one howleth, melted into tears. And Heshbon crieth, and Elealeh: their voice is heard unto Jahaz. Therefore the armed men of Moab cry out: his soul trembleth in him.

Isaiah 15:1–4 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

This is the divine revelation about Moab.

In a single night Ar in Moab is laid waste and destroyed!

In a single night Kir in Moab is laid waste and destroyed!

The people of Dibon go to the temple,

to the worship sites, to cry.

Moab wails over Nebo and Medeba.

Every head is shaved bald, and every beard is cut off.

In their streets they wear sackcloth.

On their roofs and in their city squares everyone wails and cries.

Heshbon and Elealeh also cry out.

Their voices are heard as far away as Jahaz.

Moab’s armed men cry out.

Their courage is gone.

Isaiah 15:1–4 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

An oracle against Moab:

Ar in Moab is devastated,

destroyed in a night.

Kir in Moab is devastated,

destroyed in a night.

Dibon went up to its temple

to weep at its high places.

Moab wails on Nebo and at Medeba.

Every head is shaved;

every beard is cut off.

In its streets they wear sackcloth;

on its rooftops and in its public squares everyone wails,

falling down and weeping.

Heshbon and Elealeh cry out;

their voices are heard as far away as Jahaz.

Therefore the soldiers of Moab cry out,

and they tremble.

Isaiah 15:1–4 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

An oracle concerning Moab.

Because Ar is laid waste in a night,

Moab is undone;

because Kir is laid waste in a night,

Moab is undone.

Dibon has gone up to the temple,

to the high places to weep;

over Nebo and over Medeba

Moab wails.

On every head is baldness,

every beard is shorn;

in the streets they bind on sackcloth;

on the housetops and in the squares

everyone wails and melts in tears.

Heshbon and Elealeh cry out,

their voices are heard as far as Jahaz;

therefore the loins of Moab quiver;

his soul trembles.

Isaiah 15:1–4 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

An oracle of Moab:

Because Ar is devastated in a night, Moab is destroyed;

because Kir of Moab is devastated in a night, it is destroyed.

It has gone up to the house,

and Dibon to the high places

for weeping over Nebo,

and Moab wails over Medeba.

Every head is bald,

every beard is shaved.

They gird themselves with sackcloth in its streets;

on its roofs and public squares everyone wails,

going down in weeping.

And Heshbon and Elealeh cry out,

their voice is heard as far as Jahaz;

therefore the armed ones of Moab cry out;

its soul quivers for him.

Isaiah 15:1–4 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

Here is a message the Lord gave me about Moab.

The city of Ar in Moab is destroyed.

It happened in a single night.

Kir in Moab is also destroyed.

It happened in a single night.

The people of Dibon go up to their temple to worship.

They go to their high places to sob.

The people of Moab cry over the cities of Nebo and Medeba.

All of their heads are shaved.

All of their beards have been cut off.

In the streets they wear black clothes.

On their roofs and in the market places

all of them are crying.

They fall down flat with their faces toward the ground.

And they sob.

The people of Heshbon and Elealeh cry out.

Their voices are heard all the way to Jahaz.

So the fighting men of Moab cry out.

Their hearts are weak.

Isaiah 15:1–4 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

The oracle concerning Moab.

Surely in a night Ar of Moab is devastated and ruined;

Surely in a night Kir of Moab is devastated and ruined.

They have gone up to the temple and to Dibon, even to the high places to weep.

Moab wails over Nebo and Medeba;

Everyone’s head is bald and every beard is cut off.

In their streets they have girded themselves with sackcloth;

On their housetops and in their squares

Everyone is wailing, dissolved in tears.

Heshbon and Elealeh also cry out,

Their voice is heard all the way to Jahaz;

Therefore the armed men of Moab cry aloud;

His soul trembles within him.
